Every year, Grumo Appula, a town in the province of Bari in the heart of Puglia, gathers around its patron saint for the Patronal Feast of Saint Roch of Montpellier. It is the event that best captures the town's soul: for a few days, between late September and early October, the streets of the historic center fill with lights, brass band music, the scents of market stalls, and the heartfelt participation of the locals, who return from everywhere to pay homage to their patron.
Saint Roch of Montpellier, a pilgrim and protector invoked against epidemics, is the patron saint of Grumo Appula. Devotion to the Saint spans centuries and is renewed each year with a calendar that weaves sacred rites with popular tradition. The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Roch through the town's streets, accompanied by brass bands and the faithful.
The heart of the secular festivities lies in the Historical Pageant and the Equestrian Parade, organized by the Saint's Festival Committee. Costumed figures, groups of drummers and musicians, and horses and oxen accompanying the float of Saint Roch parade through the streets, recreating an atmosphere of times past that is deeply loved by residents and visitors alike. It is one of the most photographed and significant moments of the entire event.
The patronal day opens with Holy Masses in the Mother Church and continues with the solemn Eucharistic Celebration in the presence of civil and religious authorities. In the evening, in Piazza San Pio X, the evocative ceremony of the handing over of the Keys to the Patron Saint takes place, followed by the solemn procession through the town streets accompanied by brass bands.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers brass band concerts, musical performances in the square, and traditional fireworks that close the festivities. The evenings in Piazza Vittorio Veneto host musical guests and local groups, while local associations enliven the town with initiatives involving both adults and children. The Feast of Saint Roch is, ultimately, the great community celebration of Grumo Appula, a moment where devotion, folklore, and conviviality merge in the spirit of Puglian tradition.
The official calendar for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Roch in Grumo Appula has not yet been released. The event, which usually takes place between late September and early October, will feature its traditional highlights: Holy Masses and the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Roch, the Historical Pageant with the equestrian parade, brass band concerts, and the final fireworks. Dates and the full program will be communicated by the Saint Roch Festival Committee of Grumo Appula.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Grumo Appula (province of Bari, Puglia): the Mother Church, Piazza San Pio X for the handing over of the Keys and the start of the procession, and Piazza Vittorio Veneto for the evening concerts.
The feast traditionally falls between late September and early October; dates vary from year to year and are announced by the Saint Roch Festival Committee and the parish.
Grumo Appula can be reached by car via the SS96 and A14 (Bari area exits); it is connected to Bari and the hinterland by the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane railway line. During the festival, it is recommended to park in areas outside the historic center, which is closed to traffic.
Participation in religious rites, the pageant, and concerts in the square is free.
