The patronal feast of the San Vito district, featuring a procession and the flight of the angels

Within the landscape of patronal feasts in Campania, the San Vito Festival holds a special place in the tradition of Ercolano, a Vesuvius-side city in the Metropolitan City of Naples. The celebration takes place in the San Vito district, in the upper part of the town, where the small church dedicated to the martyr saint stands. Here, every year at the beginning of autumn, the community gathers to renew a devotion rooted in centuries of rural history.
Unlike many festivals dedicated to San Vito, which occur in June, the festivities in Ercolano traditionally fall on the first Sunday of October. The date is not accidental: it coincides with the end of the grape harvest, when the local farmers, having finished picking grapes on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, could finally dedicate themselves to the festivities in honor of their protector.
The most anticipated moment is the procession that carries the statue of the saint through the streets of the district, accompanied by a brass band. The highlight is the famous flight of the angels: two young people dressed as angels are suspended from a rope and moved above the crowd towards the church, while reciting a prayer in honor of Saint Vito the martyr. It is a evocative and moving image, passed down from generation to generation, which attracts numerous faithful and curious onlookers every year.
A rich secular program develops around the religious dimension. The small church is decorated with flowers and plants, the streets of the district light up with illuminations, and market stalls are arranged in a radial pattern around the temple. The evenings feature concerts and live performances: recent editions have included artists of Neapolitan folk music and entertainment curated by local artistic directors. The festivities conclude with the unmissable fireworks, featuring a traditional pyrotechnic competition that illuminates the sky above Mount Vesuvius.
The San Vito Festival is organized by a dedicated committee, led in recent years by Enrico D'Agostino, in collaboration with the parish and under the patronage of the Municipality of Ercolano. More than just an event, it represents a moment of collective identity for the residents of the district: an opportunity to meet, strengthen bonds, and rediscover the roots of a tradition that combines popular faith, folklore, and a sense of belonging to this corner of Campania.
The 2026 San Vito Festival will return in October to Ercolano, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, to renew one of the most heartfelt religious traditions of the Vesuvius area. In the San Vito district, around the historic small church, the solemn procession of the patron saint, the characteristic flight of the angels, and secular festivities with illuminations, music, and fireworks will be repeated. The detailed calendar of the edition will be announced by the organizing committee.
Ercolano can be reached by car via the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, taking the Ercolano exit. By train, the Circumvesuviana line (Naples-Sorrento route) connects the city to the center of Naples in about twenty minutes; the San Vito district is located in the upper part of the city, towards the slopes of Mount Vesuvius.
Admission to the celebrations and performances is free. It is recommended to check the updated dates and program on the organizing committee's social media channels, as the calendar may vary from year to year.
