About Saint Giles Feast

Every September 1st, Grottolella, a small village in Irpinia just a few kilometers from Avellino, gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Giles the Abbot. The festival blends religious traditions—parish masses and a procession through the town streets—with secular celebrations, including the historic fair, illuminations, market stalls, and events in the square. It is a community day that draws back emigrants, families, and visitors from the surrounding towns of the middle Sabato valley.

A festival that welcomes September

On September 1st, Grottolella, a village of just under two thousand inhabitants in the Province of Avellino, Campania, celebrates Saint Giles the Abbot, the town's patron saint. It is the most cherished event of the year for the local community: a fixed date that never changes, marking the end of the Irpinian summer and the beginning of the harvest month. The Municipality and the parish jointly organize the day, which traditionally combines religious celebrations with secular festivities.

The patron saint

Saint Giles the Abbot, a monk who lived between the 7th and 8th centuries, is venerated throughout Europe, and his liturgical feast day falls on September 1st. In Grottolella, the bond with the saint is ancient and clearly visible in the town's toponymy and daily life: the Parish of Saint Giles the Abbot, part of the Diocese of Avellino, is located in the district of the same name and serves the entire municipal territory, spanning just over seven square kilometers with about 1,880 residents.

Religious rites and secular festivities

The day follows the classic pattern of Southern Italian patronal feasts. The liturgical aspect is handled by the parish, featuring solemn masses in honor of the patron saint and a procession with the saint's statue through the town streets, accompanied by the faithful. This religious dimension is complemented by secular activities centered in the town square: illuminations, market stalls, musical performances, and the convivial atmosphere typical of Irpinian village festivals. The 2025 edition took place on Monday, September 1st, with secular events held in the square, as announced through the Municipality's channels and the ViviAmo Grottolella community page.

The ancient Saint Giles Fair

Historically, a fair is linked to this occasion, which in the past attracted a large number of visitors from the towns of the middle Sabato river valley. Irpinian patronal fairs originated as periodic markets tied to the saint's feast day, and they still retain the character of a large open-air market today, with stalls selling various goods, local produce, and small handicrafts lining the streets throughout the day.

Grottolella, at the foot of Mount Toro

The village sits at an altitude of about 580 meters, along a ridge at the foot of Mount Toro, about ten kilometers from Avellino. The town's skyline is dominated by the Macedonio Castle, later passed to the Carafa family, a medieval fortification with three cylindrical corner towers and a square tower on the eastern side. Other sights include Palazzo Maglio, a 19th-century building with an intact stone courtyard, and the Pozzo del Sale hamlet, where sulfurous mineral springs, known since the 12th century, flow amidst hazelnut groves.

Flavors of Grottolella

The surrounding countryside has been cultivated for centuries and provides the raw ingredients for the festival: fruit—particularly the prized white apple—grain, legumes, chestnuts, hazelnuts, and walnuts, as well as typical high-quality wine, with locally produced Aglianico and Fiano. Traditional home cooking remains vibrant with dishes like pizza di granone (cornmeal pizza), menesta a' pignata (pot soup), migliazzo, and zeppole di San Giuseppe.

A village that thrives on festivals

Saint Giles is not the only event on the Grottolella calendar. Throughout the year, the village hosts the Piglet Festival in late June, the Sciurilli (zucchini flower) and Cenerentola Pizza Festival in July, the Strangolaprieviti (gnocchi) Festival in late August, and, in early September, the music, art, and theater festival Il Pasto della Salamandra promoted by the Youth Forum. Visitors arriving for the patronal feast will find a village accustomed to hospitality and celebration, set in one of the greenest parts of Irpinia.
