The patron saint festival of Prizzi, featuring a procession, drummers, a brass band, and fireworks
On April 23rd, the community of Prizzi, a village perched in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Palermo, gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint George the Martyr. It is one of the town's most deeply felt traditions, observed with great devotion by the entire citizenry and drawing back those who have emigrated and return for the occasion. Today, the festival is organized by a local committee coordinated by the archpriest's office, which has brought new energy and vigor to the event in recent years.
The festivities begin in the morning with the festive ringing of the bells that wakes the town, followed by the characteristic parade of drummers through the streets of the historic center. The morning continues with the Eucharistic celebration and a sung mass at the Mother Church, the religious heart of the Prizzi community.
The most anticipated moment arrives in the evening: after the Holy Mass, the statue of Saint George leaves the church and is carried in procession through the village streets, accompanied by a brass band and a crowd of the faithful. The celebrations conclude with traditional fireworks that illuminate the night sky.
The polychrome wooden statue kept at the high altar of the Mother Church depicts Saint George as a young Roman officer in a resting position, wrapped in a splendid red cloak, wearing a plumed helmet and holding the golden palm of martyrdom. Unlike the more common iconography, especially in the Ragusa area, which shows him on horseback in the act of slaying the dragon, the Prizzi Saint George is depicted on foot. The cult of the warrior saint arrived in Sicily with the Normans: the inhabitants of Prizzi chose him as their protector, so much so that the name Giorgio was passed down through many families in memory of the fearless Christian knight.
On the same day, April 23rd, the Saint George Fair takes place at the Foro Boario in the Zachia district. It is the first of the historic livestock fairs that Prizzi organizes throughout the year, dedicated to showcasing the region's livestock and agricultural products. The fair is rooted in the rural and pastoral vocation of the Sicani village and completes the popular and identity-driven dimension of the patronal feast.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Saint George was celebrated in Prizzi on April 23rd, the saint's day. The program followed tradition: in the morning, the festive ringing of bells and the parade of drummers through the streets of the center, followed by the Eucharistic celebration in the Mother Church. In the evening, the procession of the patron saint's statue, accompanied by a brass band and a crowd of devotees, traversed the streets of the Sicani village before the traditional fireworks. On the same day, the historic Saint George Fair, the first of Prizzi's annual livestock fairs, took place at the Foro Boario in the Zachia district.
Prizzi can be reached by car from Palermo (about an hour and a half) by taking the SS118 road towards the Sicani Mountains. The historic center, where the religious celebrations take place, is accessible on foot; the Saint George Fair is held at the Foro Boario in the Zachia district, on the outskirts of the town.
The festival is celebrated every year on April 23rd, the day dedicated to Saint George the Martyr.
Participation in the patronal feast, the procession, and the fireworks display is free.
