The August Saint Francis of Paola Festival is the most cherished and widely attended celebration in Cefalà Diana, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, perched over 560 meters above sea level at the foot of its famous medieval castle. The village honors its patron saint twice a year: the liturgical feast on April 2nd, which is more intimate and tied to the anniversary of the saint's death, and this grand summer festival, which falls every year on the third Sunday of August and represents the true highlight of the local calendar.

The Novena and Religious Rites

Festivities begin in the days leading up to Sunday with a novena, held in the Mother Church dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola: nine days of prayer that guide the community toward the climax of the feast. This devotion is rooted in the life of the saint, born in Paola, Calabria, in 1416 and founder of the Order of Minims, who is venerated as a protector of seafarers as well as families and communities against epidemics. In addition to Cefalà Diana, Saint Francis of Paola is the patron saint of Castellana Sicula, Marsala, and Milazzo.

The Solemn Procession

The most intense moment is the solemn procession of the saint's statue, carried on the shoulders of the faithful through the streets of the historic center amidst prayers, hymns, and enthusiastic public participation. Locals and visitors from neighboring towns join the parade in a display of faith that unites the entire community. A brass band accompanies the statue, setting the rhythm of the celebration with its music.

Entertainment, Music, and Fireworks

Alongside the religious rites, the program is enriched by highly anticipated secular events: concerts by the brass band, performances in the town square, and, most notably, the theatrical reenactment of the miracles of Saint Francis—a popular and evocative event that brings the episodes of the saint's life to the stage. The festivities conclude with traditional fireworks, which illuminate the village sky, delighting both adults and children.
