Saint Michael the Archangel, the warrior saint of Villafranca Sicula

In the heart of inland Sicily, in the province of Agrigento, the small town of Villafranca Sicula maintains an ancient and deep-seated devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel, the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, traditionally celebrated on September 29th. In this village of just over a thousand inhabitants, overlooking the Verdura Valley, the figure of the Archangel is deeply rooted in the collective identity and fuels one of the most significant annual observances.

The evening procession and the 'rigattiate'

The heart of the festival is the evening procession of the statue of Saint Michael, which winds through the streets of the historic center amidst illuminations, hymns, and a crowd gathered in devotion. Along the route, the most evocative and spectacular tradition comes to life: the 'rigattiate'. The bearers lift the heavy platform and carry it at a run back and forth across the squares, marking the movement to the overwhelming rhythm of the brass band, amidst cheers and great popular emotion. It is a choral rite that blends physical exertion, faith, and village celebration, capable of engaging entire generations of Villafranca locals.

The 'sammichilara' and the devotional tradition

In Villafranca Sicula, devotion to Saint Michael is guarded by the historic faction of the 'sammichilara', dressed in blue, who have always been linked to the Archangel. This devotional identity also animates the major summer festivities in honor of Maria SS. del Mirto, the town's patron saint, when the 'sammichilara' engage in a passionate rivalry with the 'sangiuannara', devotees of Saint John the Baptist. The autumn recurrence on September 29th remains the most intimate moment specifically dedicated to the Archangel, organized by the local Saint Michael the Archangel Association, which is active in preserving and promoting the tradition.

A community festival in the Agrigento hinterland

More than just a religious appointment, the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is an opportunity for the community of Villafranca Sicula and the many emigrants who return to the village to gather. Through sacred rites, music, lights, and the unmistakable atmosphere of Sicilian festivals, the event tells an authentic piece of the popular culture of the Agrigento area, far from major tourist flows and close to the most genuine roots of inland Sicily.
