The grand patronal feast of Bisacquino, between the Sanctuary on Monte Triona and the town streets
In Bisacquino, a small town in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Palermo, the Madonna del Balzo Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the very identity of the town. Every year, in the heart of summer, the entire community gathers around the statue of the Madonna for a fifteen-day celebration that culminates on August 15th, the day of the Assumption.
The bond with the Maria SS. del Balzo Sanctuary, perched on Monte Triona at an altitude of nearly 1,000 meters, is the thread that holds the entire festival together. Its origins date back to 1694, when the Capuchin friar Biagio da Caltanissetta traced the Via Sacra (Sacred Way) leading to the sanctuary, once marked by fourteen Stations of the Cross and today by twelve stone pillars. Walking up this path, sometimes barefoot, remains one of the most intense acts of devotion for the pilgrims of Bisacquino.
From August 1st to the 15th, the day is marked by masses and matinate (dawn serenades), evening rosaries recited in the various neighborhoods around characteristic small altars, and the singing of popular hymns such as "A Vui Sarvi Regina". In Piazza Triona, a monumental altar is set up to welcome the statue.
Alongside the religious rites, the evenings come alive with shows, cabaret, concerts, folk music, tastings, and traditional dances that fill the historic center. There is also the sacred representation dedicated to the legend of the discovery of the image, titled in dialect "Nostra Matri di lu Vazu", as well as cultural moments like the local literary prize. The Madonna del Balzo Festival is thus a complete experience, capable of revealing the deep soul of Bisacquino and the Palermo hinterland to visitors.
Sources confirm that in 2026, the patronal feast of Bisacquino (province of Palermo) will reach its climax on August 15th, with the preparatory fifteen-day period starting on August 1st. The structure of the festival follows the established tradition: masses and dawn serenades throughout the fifteen days, the enthronement of the Maria SS. del Balzo statue on the monumental altar in Piazza Triona around August 13th, solemn vespers, and on August 15th, the solemn evening procession through the town streets followed by the concluding Mass and the fireworks display.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including names of shows, concerts, and side events, will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on the channels of the Madonna del Balzo Congregation and the Municipality of Bisacquino.
The dates for the 2026 edition are confirmed (fifteen-day period from August 1st, culmination on August 15th, the day of the Assumption). The detailed day-by-day program, including side shows and concerts, will be announced in the weeks preceding the festival.
Bisacquino can be reached by car from the A29 Palermo-Mazara motorway (exit towards Corleone/Bisacquino) or along the SS188; it is approximately 75 km from Palermo. The Sanctuary on Monte Triona can be reached from the town along the Via Sacra, also on foot for pilgrims.
The fifteen-day period takes place from August 1st to 15th, with the highlights occurring between August 13th and 15th (Assumption).
Religious celebrations, the procession, and the square performances are free and open to all.
Wear comfortable shoes for the climb to the Sanctuary; the historic center is very crowded during the festival evenings, so it is advisable to arrive early. Accommodation is available in Bisacquino and the nearby towns of the Sicani Mountains.
