About Madonna dell'Udienza

Every September 3rd, the village of Giuliana, nestled in the mountains of the Palermo hinterland, celebrates its patron saint, Maria SS. dell'Udienza. A precious 16th-century alabaster statue, crafted by sculptor Sebastiano Lo Tinnaro, is carried in procession on an artistic 19th-century float through the narrow streets of the historic center. Between the novena, the dawn alborata, solemn masses, a brass band, and fireworks, it is the most heartfelt celebration of the year for the Giuliana community.

The patronal feast of Giuliana

The Madonna dell'Udienza Festival is the main religious and civil event in Giuliana, a small village perched in the mountains of the Palermo province, bordering the Agrigento area. Every year, around September 3rd, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, Maria Santissima dell'Udienza, in a celebration that weaves together popular devotion, tradition, and local identity.

The alabaster statue and the cult

The heart of the festival is the exquisite alabaster statue, dating back to the 16th century and attributed to the sculptor Sebastiano Lo Tinnaro. The image depicts the Virgin holding the Child, who offers a pomegranate, a symbol of the unity of the Church. The title "dell'Udienza" (of the Audience) is rooted in Carmelite tradition: according to devotion, Mary would travel to Mount Carmel every year to listen to ("give audience" to) the supplications of the faithful. The Carmelites introduced this cult to Giuliana as early as the late 13th century.

Devotion strengthened in 1837 when the town was struck by a severe cholera epidemic: according to tradition, the statue sweated multiple times, and the phenomenon ceased with the end of the contagion, which was attributed to the Madonna's intercession. In memory of that event, 150 years later, in 1987, the Church of the Carmine was elevated to a Sanctuary.

The festival program

The festivities, organized by the Confraternity of Maria SS. degli Agonizzanti together with the festival committee, begin a few days earlier with a solemn novena, during which the seven joys of Mary are recited and the rosary is sung in the Sicilian dialect. The day of the festival is announced at dawn by the traditional alborata (morning salute), followed by a solemn mass and a parade of the brass band through the town streets.

  • Novena of preparation with the seven joys of Mary and the rosary in Sicilian
  • Alborata at dawn with firecracker salutes
  • Solemn Mass and brass band parade
  • Procession of the float at sunset through the historic center
  • Fireworks and evening musical entertainment

The procession

The most moving moment is the procession which, at sunset, accompanies the simulacrum along the narrow and winding streets of the village. The scene is particularly evocative due to the size and weight of the artistic 19th-century float, which travels through the alleys of the center amidst the emotional participation of the faithful. The festivities conclude with a fireworks display and moments of entertainment and music that enliven the town squares.

Giuliana and its territory

Nestled in the heart of western Sicily, Giuliana is a village in the municipality of the same name, in the province of Palermo, dominated by its Swabian castle. The Madonna dell'Udienza festival is the best opportunity to discover the town, its traditions, and the warm hospitality of the Giuliana community, in an event that attracts emigrants and visitors from neighboring areas every year.
