Two days of art, clay, and tradition in the Ceramics Quarter
Grottaglie, in the heart of the Ionian Puglia region and the province of Taranto, has been Italy's capital of ceramics for centuries. The Grottaglie Ceramics Festival was established in 2025 to celebrate this ancient identity with a widespread, participatory event that lights up the Ceramics Quarterโone of the most evocative spots in the historic centerโfor two days in early August.
The festival takes place entirely within the famous cave-workshops carved into the tuff rock along the San Giorgio ravine, where master potters still work today. The ancient kilns, stairways, and alleys of the district become the natural stage for the event: a journey where visitors move from pottery wheel demonstrations to contemporary art exhibitions, from educational workshops to live concerts, breathing in the atmosphere of an artisanal tradition that has never been interrupted in Grottaglie.
The festival's formula combines craftsmanship, art, music, and gastronomy into a single itinerary. Recurring highlights include:
Organized by the social promotion association APS Nura with the collaboration of the Pro Loco, the festival combines its cultural dimension with a strong spirit of solidarity: the inaugural edition concluded with a charity auction of works donated by local ceramists. The event is sponsored by the Municipality of Grottaglie, the Province of Taranto, and the Tourism Department of the Puglia Region.
The Ceramics Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover Grottaglie beyond its museums: an immersion into the living craft of the potters, the scent of taralli and local wine, and the music echoing against the tuff walls. An event that tells the story of authentic Puglia through its most iconic material: clay.
The Grottaglie Ceramics Festival returns for its second edition on August 8th and 9th, 2026, in the Ceramics Quarter, located in the historic center of the city in the province of Taranto. The central theme chosen for 2026 is the Mediterranean Sea: a theme that intertwines clay and water, memory and ancient routes, in a narrative that runs through all the festival's offerings.
The event will confirm its widespread and participatory formula with workshops, exhibitions of traditional and contemporary ceramics, tastings of typical Apulian products, and live shows among the cave-workshops. The detailed program, including artists, schedules, and locations for individual activities, will be published by the organization on the festival's official channels in the weeks preceding the event.
Grottaglie is located in the province of Taranto, along the SS7 road between Taranto and Brindisi. By car: take the Grottaglie exit from the SS7. By train: Grottaglie station on the Taranto-Brindisi line. Nearest airports: Brindisi-Casale (approx. 40 km) and Bari-Palese (approx. 90 km).
Activities are concentrated in the Ceramics Quarter, in the historic center. It is recommended to park near the center and continue on foot through the cave-workshops.
Access to the festival route is free. Workshops and certain experiences (such as tasting circuits) may require booking or a contribution: we recommend checking the official website and social media channels for updated schedules and details.
