The devotion of the Atellano agro to the African bishop, spanning from the May novena to the solemn July celebrations
In Sant'Arpino, a small town in the province of Caserta nestled in the Atellano agro, devotion to Saint Elpidius the Bishop is not confined to a single day. The community calendar includes two distinct yet complementary phases: the May name-day feast, which is more intimate and liturgical, and the solemn patronal festivities that open in June and culminate on the third Sunday of July. It is one of the most deeply felt popular festivals in this part of Campania, where the border with the province of Naples is almost imperceptible and religious traditions have marked the rhythm of town life for centuries.
The first part of the festival spans ten days in May. At the Parish Church of Saint Elpidius the Bishop, overlooking Piazza Tenente Giuseppe Macrì, daily events include morning Mass with the novena, the recitation of the Holy Rosary in the late afternoon, and a second evening celebration. The calendar also features a solemn Mass presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Aversa, Monsignor Angelo Spinillo, including the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, and a closing day marked by First Communions, baptisms, and an evening procession accompanied by the brass band.
One of the most original events is the historical-cultural tour promoted jointly by the Parish, the Municipality, the Pro Loco, and the "Rocco Cinquegrana" Comprehensive Institute: catechism students and middle schoolers divide into groups across the historic center and the archaeological area, acting as guides to the sites linked to the memory of the patron saint. It is an insightful way to pass on the historical heritage of ancient Atella to the new generations.
The mortal remains of Saint Elpidius, a bishop of African origin, have been kept for centuries in the Cathedral of Salerno. This gives rise to one of the most evocative traditions of the festival: the patronal festivities open with a pilgrimage of the Sant'Arpino community to Salerno, where Mass is celebrated before the patron's relics, prior to the return to town and the flag-raising ceremony that officially kicks off the celebrations. A thread that unites two cities in Campania in the name of the same saint.
The civil heart of the festival ignites in July. The bronze statue of the saint is moved from the ancient hermitage of San Canione to the high altar of the patronal church; the town squares become open-air stages for the Fabulart theater festival and the performance of the tragedy of Saint Elpidius the Bishop; the square fills up for the "Corrida," a local talent show now in its many editions. The most anticipated moment, however, remains the procession of the wooden statue: carried on shoulders through every street in town, it stops in front of the homes of the sick and elderly, amidst fireworks along the route, before returning at midnight to Piazza Macrì for the final pyrotechnic show.
The feast of Saint Elpidius is not just a local appointment: it is the glue for a community that counts numerous emigrants, both in Italy and abroad. It is no coincidence that during the celebrations, small statues of the saint are donated to Sant'Arpino natives who have emigrated as far as Australia, and other Campanian towns linked to the bishop's cult participate in the celebrations. The brass band, artistic illuminations, market stalls, and the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial complete a collective ritual that reconnects the town with its history every year.
Those visiting the Atellano agro during these days find a town completely transformed: illuminations on the streets, chairs set up in the square from the afternoon, and entire families waiting for the passage of the statue. It is the Campania of patronal feasts in its most authentic form, just a few kilometers from Aversa and Naples.
The year 2026 confirmed the dual soul of the Sant'Arpino festival. In May, the name-day feast, from the 15th to the 24th, marked ten days of novena at the Parish Church of Saint Elpidius the Bishop; in June and July, the solemn patronal festivities filled the squares of the Municipality of Sant'Arpino, in the province of Caserta, with a program that combined liturgy, popular theater, Neapolitan music, and pyrotechnics.
On Saturday, June 20, the Cathedral of Salerno was filled with Sant'Arpino faithful — five buses departed from the town — for the opening Mass celebrated before the mortal remains of the patron saint, kept in the city for centuries. The following day, Sunday, June 21, the flag-raising ceremony at 7:30 PM officially kicked off the festivities.
The highlight week saw the transfer of the bronze statue from the hermitage of San Canione to the high altar, the tragedy of Saint Elpidius the Bishop in Piazza Salvo d'Acquisto, the solemn Mass on Sunday, July 19, presided over by Monsignor Angelo Spinillo, and the procession of the wooden statue through every street in town, concluding at midnight with the fireworks display in a packed Piazza Macrì.

Sant'Arpino is located in the Atellano agro, on the border between the province of Caserta and that of Naples, a few kilometers from Aversa and Frattamaggiore. By car, it is easily reached from the main roads connecting the area north of Naples; the most convenient train stations are Aversa and Frattamaggiore, connected to the town by bus services. On evenings with events in the square, parking in the center is very difficult: it is advisable to leave the car in the peripheral streets and arrive on foot well in advance.
All religious celebrations and events in the square are free of charge.
