Art, sea, and traditions in the fishermen's village of Nizza di Sicilia

The Ciumareddu Art Fest is an artistic and cultural event that brings life back every summer to the Fiumarello district, the historic fishermen's village of Nizza di Sicilia, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Ionian Riviera. The name requires a brief explanation: in the Sicilian dialect, the neighborhood is known as "U Ciumarreddu," and the entire event revolves around this corner of the town, where houses face the sea and boats were once pulled ashore. Promoted by the Municipality of Nizza di Sicilia, the festival was established in 2022 with the goal of enhancing and revitalizing a place steeped in memory, returning it to residents and visitors as a space for shared culture.
For the duration of the event, the alleys of Fiumarello become a true open-air museum. Along the narrow streets, you will find photography exhibitions dedicated to the history of the village, traditional fishing tools and gear, craft and embroidery works, and street art installations inspired by vintage photographs of local fishermen. Over the years, the program has woven together diverse forms of expression: book presentations, open-air cinema screenings, musical performances, and community projects, such as the creation of hand-painted ceramic house numbers. The festival has thus become an opportunity to reflect on the maritime identity of the area and the deep bond between the town and its sea.
Alongside art, a place of honor is reserved for seafood gastronomy. Fresh fish tastings are organized throughout the alleys, showcasing the simple yet flavorful cuisine of the fishermen, while boat excursions guided by local fishermen allow you to discover the coast from the perspective of those who live the sea every day. It is a tangible way to immerse yourself in the traditions of the Ionian Riviera of Messina, where fishing has defined the daily life and economy of small towns like Nizza di Sicilia for centuries.
Included in the municipal summer event calendar, the Ciumareddu Art Fest typically takes place in August, when the village fills with residents and tourists. Its free, open-air format makes it an event suitable for families, photography enthusiasts, lovers of Sicilian culture, and curious travelers looking for an authentic experience far from the major tourist circuits. Dates and the detailed program are announced by the municipal administration and local channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
The Ciumareddu Art Fest returns in 2026 to the charming Fiumarello district of Nizza di Sicilia, in the Metropolitan City of Messina. As of today, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced, nor has the detailed program. The event traditionally takes place in August, featuring exhibitions, street art, live music, fresh seafood tastings, and boat trips with local fishermen. Information will be updated as soon as the Municipality releases the calendar.
Nizza di Sicilia is located on the Ionian coast, about 40 km south of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (nearest exit) or the SS114 Orientale Sicula road. By train, the Nizza di Sicilia station is served by the Messina-Catania Ionian railway line. The most convenient airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away.
Admission to the Ciumareddu Art Fest is free. The Fiumarello district is a pedestrian-friendly village: comfortable shoes are recommended for walking through the alleys. For boat trips with fishermen and tastings, it is advisable to check availability and booking procedures with the organizers. Dates and programs are communicated by the Municipality of Nizza di Sicilia in the weeks preceding the event.
