Patronal Feast of Saint Bernardino of Siena

A Devotion Spanning Over Five Centuries

The feast of Saint Bernardino of Siena is the beating heart of Bernalda's identity, in the Province of Matera. Its origins date back to 1497, when the town's founder, Bernardino de Bernaudo, gave it his name and entrusted its celestial protection to the saint from Siena, thus establishing its civil and religious identity. Since then, the devotion has endured through the centuries, marking the community's most difficult moments: the procession in 1657 during the plague and a second recurrence added after the cholera epidemic of 1866.

When the Feast Takes Place

Historically celebrated on August 31st, since 1979 the main feast has been moved to August 23rd to facilitate the participation of agricultural workers and returning emigrants. The celebrations are spread over several days, encompassing a good part of the second half of August.

The Relic and the Historical Pageant

A fundamental part of the devotion is the relic of the Holy Body, which arrived in Bernalda in October 1980 and is an object of deep veneration. The most evocative moment is the solemn procession, accompanied by a historical pageant with participants in period costume, flag bearers, and the characteristic processional float, which winds through the historic center amidst the crowd.

Sacred and Profane Together

Alongside the religious rites, the feast offers the most joyful side of Lucanian tradition: spectacular illuminations, stalls, concerts by major Italian music artists, shows, and fireworks to conclude the celebrations. It is a time when Bernalda fills with residents, emigrants, and tourists from the nearby Ionian coast of Metaponto.

Between faith, historical memory, and public celebration, Saint Bernardino of Siena remains the most authentic expression of the Bernalda community, supported by the Municipality of Bernalda and the Association that has been organizing the festivities for years.
