The patronal feast in the heart of Salento, blending faith, tradition, and community
In the heart of Salento, in the Province of Lecce, the town of Ruffano dedicates its most important festival to Saint Anthony of Padua. The bond between the community and the Saint dates back to the 17th century: Saint Anthony was proclaimed patron of the city around 1680, and since then, this devotion has remained a defining feature of the town, evidenced by altars, paintings, papier-mรขchรฉ statues, votive shrines, and sacred images kept in churches and private homes.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Tredicina, the thirteen days from June 1st to 13th that guide the faithful toward the solemnity of the patron saint with masses, prayers, and moments of reflection. The celebrations reach their peak on June 13th, the liturgical day of Saint Anthony, with solemn masses in the Mother Church and the grand procession through the streets of the historic center.
The star of the procession is the silver statue of the Saint, a precious work created in 1791 by the Neapolitan silversmith Sebastiano Ajello, carried on shoulders through the crowd of devotees. At the end of the procession, two beloved community traditions take place: the kissing of the Relic and the distribution of Saint Anthony's bread, a sign of sharing and blessing that unites the entire town.
Beyond the religious dimension, the Saint Anthony feast in Ruffano is also an occasion for collective joy. The historic center is transformed by traditional Salento illuminations and comes alive with a rich program of music and entertainment. The procession is accompanied by the notes of the brass band, while the final evening features a pyromusical show with a cascade of lights and concerts in the square, including performances by folk groups showcasing the traditional music of Salento.
For Ruffano, the patronal feast is a moment when the entire community reunites: families return to town, streets fill with stalls and visitors, and tradition intertwines with daily life. Every year, the Saint Anthony Festival Committee, the Parish, and the Municipal Administration renew this appointment, safeguarding a heritage of faith and popular culture that is part of the soul of this corner of southern Salento.
The 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Saint Anthony of Padua in Ruffano confirmed the deep devotion of the Salento community. The Tredicina accompanied the faithful from June 1st to 13th, the highlight of the festivities with solemn masses and the grand procession of the precious 1791 silver statue through the streets of the historic center.
A particularly moving moment took place in the Mother Church, where Mayor Antonio Cavallo presented Bishop Vito Angiuli, an honorary citizen of Ruffano, with the sacred composition Dixit for four voices by the musician Giosuรจ Lillo, in memory of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Father Saverio Lillo, a central figure in the town's cultural history. The secular festival enlivened the squares with illuminations, brass band concerts, and the final pyromusical show.
