The patronal feast of Cutrofiano, in the heart of Salento
The Patronal Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is the most anticipated devotional event of the year for Cutrofiano, a town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento and southern Puglia. Saint Anthony of Padua is the town's patron saint, and his June feast brings the entire community together for three days of religious and secular celebrations that animate the historic center around the Mother Church of Santa Maria della Neve.
In the local dialect, the June recurrence is called "Sant'Antoniu Picciccu" (Little Saint Anthony), to distinguish it from other celebrations the town dedicates to the same saint throughout the year. The people of Cutrofiano are particularly devoted to Saint Anthony of Padua, a beloved figure in Salento's religious tradition, invoked as a protector and miracle worker. The feast falls around June 13th, the Saint's liturgical day, and spans three days.
The highlight of the festivities is the solemn procession, which departs from the Mother Church and winds through the town's streets with the statue of the Saint. Holy masses mark the days, with a solemn celebration concelebrated by the city's parish priests. Among the most evocative rituals is the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Saint by the mayor, a gesture that renews the deep bond between the community and its patron each year.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program that transforms Cutrofiano into a place of gathering and joy:
Cutrofiano reserves an extraordinary devotion for Saint Anthony of Padua, celebrating him multiple times throughout the year. In addition to the June patronal feast ("Sant'Antoniu Picciccu"), the town hosts the summer feast in August ("Sant'Antoniu Crande") and, above all, the famous Sant'Antoni te le Fรฒcare in February, when large bonfires lit at street corners illuminate the winter night. Each event has its own character, but all testify to the community's strong religious sentiment.
Located in the central part of Salento, Cutrofiano is known for its ancient tradition of ceramics and terracotta. The patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to discover the village, its Mother Church of Santa Maria della Neve, and Salento's hospitality, during a time of year when all of Puglia prepares for the season of patronal feasts and illuminations.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua in Cutrofiano was held on Friday, June 12, Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, with June 13 being the central liturgical day dedicated to the Saint. The Saint Anthony of Padua Patronal Feast Committee announced the three days of festivities which, as per tradition, combined religious rites with popular celebrations in the historic center of the town in the province of Lecce.
The heart of the feast was the solemn procession with the statue of the Saint through the town's streets, accompanied by holy masses and the symbolic handing over of the city keys. On the secular side, there were illuminations, brass band concerts, stands, and traditional fireworks to conclude the festivities.
