In Bolognetta, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo located in the Sicilian hinterland along the Eleuterio river valley, Saint Anthony of Padua is venerated as the patron saint. His feast is the most heartfelt moment of the year for the community and is celebrated on two distinct occasions: June 13th, the date of the Saint's liturgical feast, and the second Sunday of August, when the event becomes part of the Bolognetta Summer festivities, drawing emigrants and vacationers back to the town.
The religious heart of the festival lies in the solemn masses celebrated in the Mother Church, dedicated to Maria SS. del Carmelo and overlooking Piazza Matrice. The highlight is the procession of the statue of Saint Anthony, carried on shoulders through the main streets of the center: the parade travels along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Romano, Via Diaz, and Via Roma, accompanied by the faithful, a brass band, and festive bell ringing.
The most characteristic and anticipated element of the festival is the Vulata di L'Ancili (the "flight of the angels"): two nine-year-old girls, dressed as angels, are slid along cables stretched between two balconies overlooking Via Roma, singing a hymn to the Patron Saint during their flight. It is a rite of popular devotion with a strong emotional impact, passed down through generations and representing one of the most recognizable identity symbols of the Bolognetta community.
Among the events that enrich the festivities is the performance "The Life of Saint Anthony of Padua - Moving Human Tableaux", a sacred play that stages the key episodes of the Saint's life through living tableaux performed by local residents. The show takes place in Piazza Matrice (Giovanni Paolo II) and combines popular theater, devotion, and collective participation.
Alongside the religious rites, the patronal feast is also a moment of social gathering and civic celebration, with street lights, music, market stalls, and the inevitable traditional Sicilian sweets. In Bolognetta, the devotion to Saint Anthony sits alongside other local calendar events - from Corpus Domini to the feasts of Saint Joseph and the Immaculate Conception - confirming the town's strong bond with its Christian tradition and a heritage of popular rites that continues to live on in today's Sicily.
The celebrations in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua, patron saint of Bolognetta (Metropolitan City of Palermo), return in 2026 according to the usual schedule: June 13th for the liturgical feast and the second Sunday of August during the Bolognetta Summer. At the moment, the official program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. As per tradition, religious services in the Mother Church, the procession of the statue along the streets of the center, and popular festival events, including the evocative Vulata di L'Ancili, are expected. Information will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
Bolognetta is located in the hinterland of the province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the SS121 (Palermo-Agrigento); the capital, Palermo, is about 30 km away. The nearest train station is Bolognetta-Marineo on the regional line.
The feast is celebrated on June 13th (liturgical feast) and the second Sunday of August during the Bolognetta Summer.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and the performances in the square are free and open to all.
