The Patronal Feast of Maria SS. Assunta is the most anticipated event of the year in Trepuzzi, a town in northern Salento in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. Celebrated at Ferragosto, the feast honors the Madonna Assunta, the town's patron saint, and transforms the entire historic center into a grand space of devotion and popular celebration, also involving the seaside hamlet of Casalabate.
The heart of the celebrations is the Mother Church of Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo, built in 1603 on an earlier structure. Originally dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle, the church has recognized the Assunta as the titular saint and patron of Trepuzzi since 1792; a large 1766 canvas depicting the Assumption of the Virgin stands out on the high altar. Around this ancient devotion, the Trepuzzi Ferragosto ritual has been consolidated over the centuries, passed down from generation to generation.
The celebrations begin with the enthronement of the ancient statue of the Assunta, carried in a solemn procession and placed on the altar of the Mother Church. This is followed by the days of the novena, with the rosary, lauds, vespers, and masses led by the community's priests. The vigil of August 14th culminates in the traditional procession with the statue through the city streets and the entrustment of the town to the Madonna. On August 15th, the solemnity of the Assumption, the day is marked by celebrations from the morning and the solemn concelebration presided over by the Archbishop of Lecce, while on August 16th, the feast concludes with the singing of the Te Deum.
Alongside the religious dimension, Trepuzzi experiences its grand secular feast. Largo Margherita hosts the bandstand where prestigious brass bands of the Apulian tradition perform, authentic band concerts playing operatic and symphonic transcriptions. The town streets are illuminated with artistic luminarie, a street market comes alive with stalls and local products, and the night is framed by spectacular fireworks. The celebrations are also accompanied by the Bande a Sud festival, a showcase of band imagery that weaves the glorious tradition of brass bands with contemporary sounds during the same period.
The Assunta Feast is the authentic soul of Trepuzzi: a blend of sacred and profane that brings together residents, returning emigrants, and visitors. Those arriving in the Municipality of Trepuzzi at Ferragosto find the best synthesis of summer in Salento, amidst popular faith, band music, lights, and the flavors of land and sea.
The Patronal Feast of Maria SS. Assunta will return in 2026 to Trepuzzi, in the Province of Lecce, during the usual Ferragosto period. As every year, the festival is expected to be divided between the religious dimension — enthronement of the ancient statue, novena, procession of the Assunta, and solemn celebrations in the Mother Church — and the secular feast in Largo Margherita, with grand brass bands in the bandstand, artistic illuminations, a street market, and fireworks.
