Six days of faith, illuminations, and music in the heart of Solofra
In Solofra, a town in the Province of Avellino overlooking the Irno Valley at the foot of the Picentini Mountains, devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel is deeply woven into the local identity. Every year, in the second half of June, the Patronal Feast draws thousands of people to the center: residents, locals returning for the occasion, and visitors from neighboring towns in Campania.
The festival is organized by the Saint Michael the Archangel Festival Committee with the support of the Municipality of Solofra and follows two parallel paths: a religious program curated by the Collegiate Church parish and a secular program featuring music, lights, and gastronomy. The result is a six-day event that brings together, as the organizers themselves state, faith, identity, tradition, and innovation.
The spiritual center of the festival is the Collegiate Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, one of the masterpieces of Campanian Baroque. This is where the preparatory novena, the triduum, and the solemn mass on the patron saint's day are celebrated.
The most anticipated moment remains the procession with the statue of the Archangel, which winds through the city streets accompanied by confraternities, parish groups, and brass bands. Along the route, families decorate their balconies, while the faithful follow the pageant until the return to the church: it is the part of the festival that best captures the bond between Solofra and its protector.
The opening of the festivities coincides with the musical lighting of the artistic illuminations in Piazza San Michele. Luminous arches, installations, and light shows synchronized with music, created using RGB technology, officially kick off the festival week. In recent years, it has become one of the most photographed events in the entire province and is worth a visit on its own.
The musical program brings together two worlds that coexist here seamlessly. On one hand, the Southern brass band tradition, with guest grand concert bands performing lyrical and symphonic transcriptions while parading through the streets; on the other, Solofra Street Sound, the live concert series that brings pop, rock, and urban bands and artists to the stage in Piazza San Michele, with nights continuing late into the evening.
The final evening concludes with a double thrill: the pyromusical lighting of the Collegiate Church bell tower and, following that, the grand "City of Solofra" fireworks display in the Pastena area, which illuminates the valley and can be admired from most of the town. It is the moment when the entire city looks up to the sky, and for years, it has been the signature closing act of the festivities.
The Saint Michael festivities are an excellent way to get to know Solofra beyond its reputation as a leather-tanning district: here, the patronal feast is still a matter of committees, neighborhoods, and families, and you can feel it. Visitors from outside find free entry to all events, a historic center alive on foot until late at night, and the chance to visit the Collegiate Church, which remains one of the most beautiful monuments in the Campania Region.
Six days of celebration, from June 18 to 23, 2026, brought Solofra together around its patron saint. The Saint Michael the Archangel Festival Committee built a calendar that alternated moments of devotion and popular events, with the city center transformed into one large meeting space.
The hallmark of the edition was the return of the restored wooden statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, welcomed into the Collegiate Church at the opening of the festivities and then carried in procession on the patron saint's day. On the secular front, the musical lighting of the illuminations with RGB technology, the fourth edition of Solofra Street Food, the street performers festival, and the Solofra Street Sound evenings filled squares and alleys until late at night.
Guest grand concert bands also contributed to the musical portion, following a tradition that remains very deeply felt in Irpinia. The farewell, on the evening of June 23, came with the pyromusical lighting of the bell tower and the "âĶe lucean le stelle" fireworks display in the Pastena area.
Solofra is located along the Avellino-Salerno highway junction, with a dedicated exit just minutes from the center. During the festivities, the heart of the city is closed to traffic: it is best to leave your car in peripheral parking areas and reach Piazza San Michele on foot.
The hub of the events is Piazza San Michele, in front of the Collegiate Church; the Solofra Street Food stalls and street performers are spread along the streets of the historic center. The final fireworks display is held in the Pastena area and is visible from most of the town.
Entry to all events, including concerts, is free of charge. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls.
The concert evenings and the night of the fireworks are the most crowded: it is better to arrive an hour early to find a spot in the square. June days in Irpinia can be hot, but the air cools down in the evening: a light sweatshirt is useful.
