The Nativity comes to life amidst nature, history, and tradition in the heart of Salento
In the heart of Salento, just a short distance from the center of Cannole (province of Lecce), Parco Torcito becomes the natural stage for one of the most evocative living nativity scenes in Puglia every holiday season. Nestled among dry-stone walls, rural courtyards, and paths that tell centuries of history, the nativity scene combines spirituality, tradition, and scenic beauty into a single emotional journey that turns the park into an enchanted village where the Nativity comes to life.
The path winds along the ancient southern Via Francigena and crosses the iconic sites of the ancient medieval farm complex: the Torre Colombaia, the fascinating neviere (historic ice houses), and a captivating underground olive mill carved into the rock. Along the way, moving craft scenes, costumed actors, and meticulously detailed settings guide visitors through the discovery of ancient trades, leading up to the Nativity Hut. The fortified Masseria di Torcito, whose original core dates back to the 12th century, provides a historic backdrop for the entire route.
The experience goes beyond the sacred representation, enriched with moments designed for both adults and children. The scents of Salento tradition fill the winter evenings, with freshly fried pittule and mulled wine, perfect for warming the body and spirit.
The event is held under the patronage of the Province of Lecce and the municipalities of Cannole, Palmariggi, and Carpignano Salentino, with the collaboration of local Pro Loco associations and parishes. Parco Torcito, a natural and archaeological area owned by the Province of Lecce and managed by MGM Srl, preserves a valuable environmental and rural heritage, halfway between Otranto and the Salento hinterland. Admission to the living nativity is free, offering a chance to experience Christmas in a unique setting where nature, faith, and culture intertwine.
The 2025-2026 edition of the Parco Torcito Living Nativity brought the Cannole park to life over six evenings, from December 26 to 28, 2025, and on January 3, 4, and 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Visitors walked along the ancient Via Francigena, passing through the Torre Colombaia, the historic ice houses, and the underground olive mill, encountering costumed actors engaged in traditional trades, leading up to the Nativity Hut.
The edition was enriched by an elf village for children, a selfie area, refreshment points serving pittule and mulled wine, and an exhibition space in the Masseria Grande dedicated to Apulian artisans and producers. The event was held under the patronage of the Province of Lecce and the municipalities of Cannole, Palmariggi, and Carpignano Salentino, with the collaboration of local Pro Loco associations and parishes.
