The autumn festival of Anguillara Sabazia featuring chestnuts, wine, and local traditions
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every November, as the leaves turn yellow and the air grows crisp, the historic center of Anguillara Sabazia fills with the scent of roasted chestnuts and new wine. San Martino Chestnuts and Wine is one of the most beloved events in the village's folk calendar, a gathering that brings generations together around ancient rituals: the crackle of roasted chestnuts over the fire, a shared glass of wine, lively chatter, and spontaneous dancing in the square.
The festival takes its name from the old saying "at San Martino, every must becomes wine": it is on November 11th, St. Martin's Day, that farmers traditionally tasted the year's new wine, pairing it with freshly harvested chestnuts. In Anguillara, this custom comes alive in the heart of the town, in a festive atmosphere open to all.
The heart of the event is Piazza del Comune, in the charming historic center of Anguillara Sabazia, a medieval village perched on a promontory overlooking Lake Bracciano. The town's streets, with their narrow alleys and glimpses of the lake, provide the perfect backdrop for food stalls, the artisan market, and musical performances.
The event is promoted by Rione Castello, a historic local association, with the patronage of the Pro Loco of Anguillara Sabazia and the Municipality of Anguillara Sabazia. It is a free-entry event designed to showcase the historic center and its traditions.
Located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region, Anguillara Sabazia is one of the most characteristic villages in the Lake Bracciano area. Just a few kilometers from the capital, it combines the charm of a medieval historic center with the beauty of the lakeside landscape. The San Martino festival is the perfect opportunity to discover the town on one of its most authentic and lively days.
The new edition of San Martino Chestnuts and Wine is expected in November 2026 in the historic center of Anguillara Sabazia, on Lake Bracciano. The festival, promoted by Rione Castello with the support of the Pro Loco and the Municipality, will renew the appointment with roasted chestnuts, new wine, mulled wine, an artisan market, and live music in Piazza del Comune. The official date and detailed program will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
By car: Anguillara Sabazia is about 35 km from Rome, accessible via the Via Braccianese (SS493) or the Cassia exit from the Grande Raccordo Anulare. By train: the Anguillara station is served by the FL3 regional line Rome-Viterbo (the station is a few kilometers from the historic center, connected by a local bus service).
Free admission, no booking required. Given the usual turnout, we recommend arriving early to find parking near the center and enjoy the square. Comfortable and warm clothing is recommended, as it is an outdoor autumn event.
