The Pani Cunzatu Festival is one of the most cherished gastronomic events of the summer in Capri Leone, a small town in the province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast of the Nebrodi. The festival takes place in the coastal hamlet of Rocca di Capri Leone, in Piazza Mattarella, and centers around a humble yet delicious specialty of Sicilian folk cuisine: pani cunzatu, literally meaning "seasoned bread".

What is pani cunzatu?

Pani cunzatu originated as a peasant and fisherman's dish: a loaf of warm, fragrant homemade bread, sliced open and dressed with simple local ingredients. The traditional recipe features fresh tomatoes, local cheese, salted anchovies, oregano, salt, pepper, and a generous drizzle of Sicilian extra virgin olive oil. It is a genuine bite that encapsulates all the flavors of the island, prepared and served fresh to visitors during the festival.

A festive evening in Rocca di Capri Leone

The event is organized by the Ass. Circolo ANSPI Maria SS. del Tindari, which plays an active role in the community's social and religious life. The festival is typically held in August, at the height of the summer season, when the village is bustling with residents and holidaymakers. The evening combines the tasting of seasoned bread with a festive atmosphere, featuring live music and a dance party that keeps the square lively until late, often hosted by the De Colores Band.

The event is held in the evening, generally starting from 8:30 PM, in Piazza Mattarella in Rocca di Capri Leone.
