The queen of the Nebrodi autumn in Montagnareale
The Chestnut Festival is the most anticipated autumn event in Montagnareale, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina nestled on the slopes of the Nebrodi mountains in Sicily, with views stretching toward the Gulf of Patti. Established in 1974 and organized by the historic Mutual Aid Society of Montagnareale, the festival is now a well-established tradition that transforms the village into a grand autumn hub every October.
For an entire day, the historic center comes alive with a vibrant culinary trail. Along the streets and in the squares, food stalls offer fragrant roasted chestnuts, raw chestnuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts, as well as local confectionery specialties: chestnut bread and cakes, cannoli filled with ricotta and chestnut cream, Nebrodi honey, and artisanal liqueurs. Alongside the food, artisan and artist stalls showcase traditional local crafts and creations.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover the heritage of Montagnareale. Offerings include excursions into the chestnut groves and surrounding nature, guided tours of the historic center, and sites of rural memory: the ancient Capo mill along the stream, and the recently restored ancient oil mills and wine presses. There is no shortage of entertainment for children, as well as exhibitions and performances that tell the story of a town deeply connected to the land and its seasons.
The day concludes in the main square with music and dancing: musical performances and folk groups accompany residents and visitors in a celebration that combines taste, culture, and conviviality. The Chestnut Festival is the perfect appointment to experience the Nebrodi autumn and savor the authentic flavors of the province of Messina.
The event takes place in the historic center of Montagnareale, with the heart of the activities located between Piazza della Vittoria and Piazza Dante. Admission to the festival is free.
The Chestnut Festival of Montagnareale returns on Sunday, October 26, 2026, for its 50th edition, an important milestone for a festival born in 1974. As per tradition, the historic center between Piazza della Vittoria and Piazza Dante will welcome stalls featuring roasted chestnuts, chestnut desserts, and typical Nebrodi products, along with excursions, guided tours, entertainment, and music.
The detailed program with event times will be announced by the Mutual Aid Society of Montagnareale closer to the date.
Montagnareale can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Patti exit and continuing along the hilly roads towards the Nebrodi village. The nearest train station is Patti-San Piero Patti, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
Access to the festival is free. Tastings and products at the food stalls are available for purchase.
We recommend comfortable clothing for walking in the historic center and for excursions into the chestnut groves. For updated schedules and program details, it is useful to check the official channels of the Municipality of Montagnareale.
