The Pane Cunzato Festival is one of the culinary highlights of the summer in Misiliscemi, a municipality in the province of Trapani, Sicily. Born from the union of eight local districts—including Salinagrande, Guarrato, Rilievo, Marausa, Locogrande, Palma, Pietretagliate, and Fontanasalsa—Misiliscemi is a young community that has chosen to promote its folk traditions through a packed calendar of summer festivals. The event is dedicated to one of the symbols of Sicilian peasant cuisine: pane cunzato, literally "seasoned bread".
Pane cunzato originated as a simple, hearty peasant dish: a loaf of durum wheat bread, often still warm, sliced open and seasoned with extra virgin olive oil, fresh tomatoes, oregano, salt, salted anchovies, and primosale or pecorino cheese. Every family has its own recipe, and this variety makes the festival a perfect opportunity to rediscover the authentic flavors of the Trapani area, between the sea and the countryside.
The event typically takes place on a summer evening, with stalls preparing the seasoned bread on the spot, accompanied by live music. The festival is part of the "Sere d'Estate" (Summer Evenings) program promoted by the Misiliscemi municipal administration, a series of events running from June to September across the various districts, alternating concerts, theatrical performances, sports events, and traditional festivals dedicated to local products, such as the Watermelon Festival and the Pane Cunzato Festival itself.
Visiting the Pane Cunzato Festival is also a way to get to know Misiliscemi, a territory overlooking the sea just a few kilometers from Trapani and the salt pans, where gastronomic tradition intertwines with the agricultural and coastal landscape of western Sicily. The festival offers an authentic experience, far from the main tourist flows, ideal for those seeking the true flavors of the island.
The municipal administration of Misiliscemi has included the Pane Cunzato Festival in the "Sere d'Estate 2026" summer calendar, the program of events that brings the municipality's districts to life from June to September with concerts, shows, sports activities, and festivals dedicated to typical local products. The exact date and the district that will host the festival have not yet been communicated: the complete calendar will be released through the official channels of the Municipality of Misiliscemi.
Misiliscemi is located in western Sicily, south of Trapani. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 or the A29 motorway (Trapani/Marsala exit). Trapani-Birgi Airport (Vincenzo Florio) is just a few minutes from the southern districts of the municipality.
The festival is usually held in the summer, typically in August, as part of the municipality's "Sere d'Estate" program.
Admission and participation in municipal festivals are generally free; tastings are paid for directly at the stalls. For updated dates and locations, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Misiliscemi.
