A month of lights, markets, and a living nativity scene throughout the squares and historic districts of Palma Campania
From December 6th to January 6th, Palma Campania transforms into a large open-air Christmas village. The Palma Campania Christmas Village is not confined to a single fenced area; it breathes life into the squares, alleys, streets, and historic districts of the town, located in the province of Naples, in the heart of the Vesuvian Campania region. This is a deliberate choice by the municipal administration, which aimed for a festival spread across the entire territory, capable of enhancing local identity, neighborhood commerce, and popular traditions. The result is a month-long calendar of events, almost entirely free, that accompanies the city from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception through to Epiphany.
The event has its roots in the "Natale Insieme" (Christmas Together) series, promoted by the Municipality of Palma Campania with the support of the Metropolitan City of Naples. By 2022, the festival had already reached its third edition, featuring charity markets in Piazza De Martino, book presentations and performances at the Municipal Theatre, concerts, video mapping, and the "La Palma d'Oro" award. For the 2025-2026 edition, the program was rebranded as the Christmas Village and extended until January 6th, under the direction of Mayor Aniello Donnarumma and Councilor for Events Elvira Franzese, with the collaboration of associations, parishes, schools, and local merchants.
The festivities kick off with the lighting of the grand Christmas tree in Piazza De Martino, accompanied by creative workshops and music. On subsequent weekends, the same square hosts the Santa's Village, featuring entertainment, shows, workshops, and a free-entry 3D pathโa "virtual yet real" experience designed especially for children. These events are complemented by "Sport in Piazza," which involves local sports clubs on Sunday mornings with free trials and demonstrations for children and teenagers.
Among the most anticipated events is the White Night of Commerce, which illuminates the town center until midnight and involves local shops. The evening features:
The Christmas Village also highlights the town's two historic districts. At Borgo Vico, "In Vico Veritas โ Christmas Edition" returns, an evening organized by the youth of Vico that opens up the district's characteristic alleys, offering traditional dishes, wine, and folk music: a sensory experience that combines Campanian cuisine with street-side conviviality. At the beginning of January, the Castello district takes center stage with the Living Nativity at the Borgo. The stone houses, narrow streets, and ancient corners become an open-air Bethlehem, complete with costumed actors, traditional crafts, wood-fired ovens, shepherds, animals, and the Holy Family. The setup is the result of the work of the Borgo Castello association and the Proloco Castello di Palma, together with the parish communities of San Giovanni e Martino, San Michele Arcangelo, and San Nicola di Bari, under the patronage of the Municipality.
The strength of the Christmas Village lies in its accessibility: the main events are free and spread over several weekends, allowing visitors from outside the area to choose the most convenient date. Activities for children (workshops, 3D path, entertainment) are concentrated in the mornings and early afternoons, while evenings are dedicated to music, gastronomy, and strolls among the illuminations. Those seeking the most authentic atmosphere should head to the two historic districts, where the Christmas spirit of Palma retains a popular and communal character.
Palma Campania is known throughout the Campania region primarily for its Carnival and its famous quadriglie, which mobilize entire neighborhoods for months of preparation every year. The same spirit of collective participation is found during the Christmas period: the Christmas Village is not an event imposed from above, but the result of the work of associations, parishes, neighborhood committees, and merchants. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover a center in the Vesuvian area far from mass tourism circuits, just a short distance from Nola, Mount Vesuvius, and the archaeological excavations of the area.
From December 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026, Palma Campania experienced its first edition under the new name Christmas Village, promoted by Mayor Aniello Donnarumma and Councilor for Events Elvira Franzese. The guiding idea was that of a widespread Christmas village, without fences, capable of animating squares, alleys, and neighborhoods for a full month.
The opening, on Saturday, December 6th at 6:00 PM in Piazza De Martino, combined the lighting of the grand Christmas tree with creative workshops and music. On the following Sundays, the same square hosted the Santa's Village with a free 3D path and the "Sport in Piazza" events. Friday, December 12th, was the turn of the White Night of Commerce, with shops open until midnight along Via Trieste, Via Roma, Via Marconi, Via Municipio, and Via San Felice, featuring entertainment, street food, a Ferris wheel, and Santa's cottage. On Saturday, December 13th, Borgo Vico proposed "In Vico Veritas โ Christmas Edition," featuring traditional dishes, wine, and folk music.
The finale was entrusted to the Castello district, with the Living Nativity at the Borgo from January 2nd to 4th, 2026: costumed actors, ancient crafts, and Nativity scenes along the stone streets of the village, organized by the Borgo Castello association and the parish communities.
The program also includes the historic appointments of the Palma Christmas festival, such as "A book under the tree" and the "La Palma d'Oro" award, and continues with widespread initiatives until Epiphany.
By car: take the Palma Campania exit on the A30 Caserta-Salerno motorway, then follow signs for the center. By train and bus: the Circumvesuviana line (Naples-Ottaviano-Sarno) serves the area with the Rione Trieste station, which is connected to the center by bus; EAV buses also depart from the Naples Circumvesuviana terminal directly to Palma Campania.
The events are spread throughout the town: Piazza De Martino (tree, Santa's Village, Sport in Piazza), the town center with Via Trieste, Via Roma, Via Marconi, Via Municipio, and Via San Felice (White Night), Borgo Vico, and the Castello district (Living Nativity).
Admission to the scheduled events is free; the 3D path at Santa's Village is also free. Only food and drink at gastronomic stands, purchases at markets, and token-operated attractions like the Ferris wheel require payment.
The alleys of the historic districts are paved with stone and uphill: comfortable shoes are recommended. On evenings with high attendance, it is advisable to park outside the center and reach the squares on foot.
