A seventy-year-old challenge at sea

The Palio Marinaro dell'Assunta is the quintessential identity-defining event for Castiglione della Pescaia, a jewel of the Maremma coast in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany. Every summer, the village divides and ignites for the grand rowing regatta that pits the five historic districts against one another in a competition that goes far beyond sport: it is a symbolic clash between neighborhoods, a moment of civic pride, and a magnet for thousands of spectators.

The origins: from fishermen to the lance race

The history of the Palio is rooted in the town's maritime traditions. A lance race was documented as early as 1820, when rowers competed on the Fiumara to snatch a flag hoisted on a vessel. However, the modern event was born in 1952, driven by local fishermen and inspired by the famous Palio dell'Argentario in Porto Santo Stefano. For decades, the regattas were held in the Bruna River, with the public crowding the banks on bicycles and mopeds; since 2009, the challenge has taken place in the open sea, starting in front of the port and finishing in the picturesque canal.

The five districts and their gozzo boats

The five districts into which the village is ideally divided compete for the banner, each with its own colors and its own gozzo boat:

• Castello (yellow and green) — Rondine boat
• Marina (white and red) — Sbriglio boat
• Piazza (white and green) — Branzino boat
• Ponte Giorgini (white and light blue) — Delfino boat
• Portaccia (yellow and red) — Storione boat

Each vessel is manned by four rowers and a coxswain: strength, coordination, and team spirit make the difference on a course that also requires skill in maneuvering turns.

One season, three Palios

The Palio dell'Assunta is the main senior race, which concludes a season consisting of several events. In July, the Youth Palio (under category, established in 1978) and the Women's Palio (born in 1997) are held, while at the end of August, the Super Palio of the Maremma Coast often takes place, opening the challenge to crews from Orbetello, Isola del Giglio, and Talamone. The points accumulated in the various regattas contribute to awarding the prestigious final prize to the district with the best overall performance.

Atmosphere and tradition

The day of the Assunta regatta is preceded by the solemn Mass of the Assumption and a procession of the districts that winds through the historic center, accompanied by the flag-wavers and drummers of Torrita di Siena. At sunset, when the boats cross the finish line in the Porto Canale, the village erupts in a roar: it is the moment when Castiglione della Pescaia celebrates itself, its maritime soul, and its deep bond with the Maremma sea.
