The Palio di San Vito – The Coming of the Norman is a historical re-enactment held in the old town of San Vito dei Normanni, a town in the province of Brindisi, Apulia. Promoted by the Municipality of San Vito dei Normanni, the event immerses the community and visitors in the atmosphere of the 11th century, when the Normans first arrived in northern Salento.
The central theme of the re-enactment is the figure of Bohemond of Hauteville, son of Robert Guiscard and Prince of Taranto, to whom tradition attributes the construction of the square tower around which the ancient village developed. The town owes its name to this Norman legacy, and the Palio commemorates it by turning squares and alleyways into a grand open-air theatre.
The heart of the festival is the competition between the city's districts, which face off in medieval-inspired trials and games throughout the event. Among the most distinctive competitions is the Saracen Throw, a costumed version of the shot put that recalls the resistance against raids. The historical pageant, featuring participants in period costumes, opens and closes the event, culminating in the presentation of the Palio banner to the winning district.
The programme alternates between spectacular performances and popular entertainment:
Created to celebrate the Norman memory and local historical heritage, the event involves schools, associations, and the local Pro Loco, strengthening the sense of belonging among the residents and offering visitors an authentic immersion into the Apulian Middle Ages. In just a few editions, the Palio di San Vito has established itself as one of the most cherished historical re-enactments in the province of Brindisi.
At the moment, the organisers have not yet released the dates and programme for the 2026 edition of the Palio di San Vito – The Coming of the Norman. The event, traditionally hosted in June in the historic centre of San Vito dei Normanni (province of Brindisi, Apulia), is expected to feature its usual format with a historical pageant, district challenges, military encampments, and costumed performances. Information will be updated as soon as the Municipality releases the official calendar.
San Vito dei Normanni is located in the hinterland of the province of Brindisi. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 and SS379 Bari-Brindisi roads. The nearest train station is in San Vito dei Normanni on the Adriatic line; the reference airport is Brindisi-Salento, approximately 20 km away.
The events are concentrated in the town's historic centre, throughout the squares and streets of the old village.
This is a popular, free-to-attend event held in public spaces in the centre. For updated dates and programmes, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of San Vito dei Normanni.
