A living nativity scene set within the caves of the Lama del Trappeto rock village in Fasano

The Pezze di Greco Living Nativity is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in Puglia. It takes place in the Lama del Trappeto Rock Village, located in Pezze di Greco, a hamlet of Fasano in the province of Brindisi. Since 1987, a dedicated group of local farmers and volunteers has transformed this ancient settlement, carved directly into the tufa, into an extraordinary natural stage where the Nativity is brought to life every winter, deeply rooted in the peasant civilization of the past.
The 'lama' is a natural erosive ravine with steep sides, where inhabitants over the centuries carved out homes, crypts, oil mills, and shelters. Walking through the village means entering an underground world of interconnected caves, where the simplicity of medieval life can still be felt within the stone walls. In this evocative setting, the nativity is not just a performance, but a complete sensory experience: the warmth of the fires, the aroma of freshly baked bread, extra virgin olive oil, and focaccia, and the vibrant colors of traditional costumes.
The trail comes alive thanks to over three hundred actors in period dress who stage the daily tasks of rural life: the blacksmith, the baker, the potter, the spinner, the shepherds, and the farmers at work. Each cave tells the story of an ancient craft, leading to the central point of the Nativity, the spiritual heart of the representation. This authenticity of human connection and craftsmanship makes the Pezze di Greco Living Nativity a unique event in the Puglian landscape.
Organized by the Pezze di Greco Living Nativity Cultural Association with the support of the S. Maria del Carmine parish community, the event is sponsored by the Puglia Region, the Province of Brindisi, the City of Fasano, and the Diocese of Conversano-Monopoli. Each edition attracts thousands of visitors and organized groups from all over the region and beyond, confirming its status as one of the most charming Christmas events in Southern Italy. A shuttle service connecting Fasano to the Rock Village is available on opening days.
