The historical re-enactment of the Farinoti and Semoloti districts in Borgo Valsugana
The Palio dela Brenta is the signature event of Borgo Valsugana, in the province of Trento, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Born as a playful challenge in the mid-eighties, this summer event has evolved over the years into one of the most heartfelt and well-attended historical re-enactments in the Valsugana valley, engaging the entire community and drawing thousands of visitors to the banks of the Brenta river.
The heart of the Palio is the challenge between the two town districts. The Farinoti, associated with the Castel Telvana area, represent the wealthier class and parade with ladies, knights, pages, nobles, and armed horsemen. The Semoloti, rooted around the church of Sant'Anna, embody the peasant and working-class world, with humble clothing, carts, and agricultural tools that recreate the daily gestures of rural life. The two processions meet in the square to exchange challenges in dialectal verse, kicking off the day's contests.
During the festival, the districts face off in numerous traditional trials: stilt racing, tower throwing, the 'serci' competition, the 'muse' (wooden spinning top) race, and skill tests like slingshot and archery. The most spectacular challenge, however, is the raft race on the Brenta: on the illuminated river, the yellow rafts of the Semoloti and the red ones of the Farinoti compete for victory in a ritual that evokes the ancient craft of the valley's rafters.
The highlight is the grand historical procession, featuring over three hundred participants in period costumes sewn by local seamstresses. There is no shortage of flag-wavers, costumed performances, medieval readings for children, and the re-enactment of the 'rustic war'. To complete the festivities, the Palio tavern and the food tent offer the flavors of Trentino tradition, while the winning district receives the coveted Palio on the final evening.
Organized by the Pro Loco Borgo Valsugana, the Palio dela Brenta is much more than a re-enactment: it is a tool for rediscovering and updating local history, an opportunity for gathering that unites different generations around the roots of the town. An authentic festival that deserves a visit for those who want to know the truest soul of the Valsugana.
The 39th edition of the Palio dela Brenta will be held on August 7 and 8, 2026, in Borgo Valsugana, with the heart of the event in Piazza Degasperi and along the Brenta river. The historical re-enactment pitting the Farinoti and Semoloti districts against each other is confirmed by the APT Valsugana, featuring costumed processions, dialectal poetry duels, traditional games, and the famous raft race on the illuminated river.
The detailed program with times and appointments will be announced by the Pro Loco Borgo Valsugana in the weeks leading up to the event. It is recommended to check the official channels for updates.
