A 16th-century historical re-enactment and the Barrel Race in the heart of the Nola area

The Palio dei Quartieri "Universitas Castri Cicciani" is the signature identity festival of Cicciano, a town in the Nola area of the Campania region. Established in 2001 by the Pro Loco Cicciano, the event commemorates the 16th-century Commenda of Castel Cicciano every year between late May and early June, when the village was governed by the Knights of Malta from their fortified residence.
The heart of the event is the competition between the five historic districts of the town, which return to life for the occasion under their ancient names:
Each district prepares decorations and ornate gates, organizes its own participants, and fields teams for the challenges that determine the winner of the Palio: traditional games, skill trials like archery and tug-of-war, and above all, the race that has made the festival famous beyond regional borders.
The National Barrel Racing Palio is the most anticipated event: representatives from the districts race while pushing heavy barrels along the town route, in a competition that has evolved into an official stage of the national championship. Alongside the adult race, there is a children's Palio and youth trials, ensuring the entire community participates in the contest.
The most scenic moment is the grand 16th-century historical costume pageant, featuring hundreds of participants, ladies, knights, musicians, jesters, and flag-wavers marching to the square in front of the Casa Fortezza, the ancient seat of the Knights of Malta Commanders. The re-enactment is enhanced by an arts and ancient crafts fair, period encampments, and craft demonstrations that reconstruct the daily life of the village in the 16th century.
The evenings of the Palio combine musical performances, folk group shows, and local artists with food and wine stalls and street food that bring the historic center to life. For two days, Cicciano becomes a small open-air theater where the memory of the Commenda, district pride, and popular festivities intertwine, offering residents and visitors an authentic immersion into the traditions of the Neapolitan hinterland.
The Palio dei Quartieri "Universitas Castri Cicciani" is an annual event usually held between late May and early June in the historic center of Cicciano (Naples). For the 2026 edition, the official dates and program have not yet been published by Pro Loco Cicciano. The usual format is expected, featuring the Renaissance historical pageant, the challenge between the five districts, and the National Barrel Racing Palio. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
Cicciano is located in the Nola area, east of Naples. By car, it can be reached via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Nola exit) or the SS7 bis road. By train, the Cicciano station is served by the Circumvesuviana (EAV) line from Naples and Baiano.
The event takes place in the historic center and is free to attend. The historical pageant, games, and Barrel Race are open to the public at no cost.
