The patronal feast of Sutera, a village perched on the San Paolino cliff
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is the main religious event in Sutera, a small town of just over 1,400 inhabitants perched around the striking gypsum cliff of Mount San Paolino, in the heart of inland Sicily in the province of Caltanissetta. Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, the town offers a viewpoint with panoramas stretching from Mount Etna to the Gulf of Agrigento, and every July 16th, the community gathers around its patron saint for one of its most beloved celebrations.
The highlight of the festival is the procession of the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which moves in the afternoon from the Church of Maria SS. del Carmelo in the Rabatello district, traversing the narrow village streets to the Church of Sant'Agata before returning to the Carmine. There, the solemn Act of Entrustment of the people of Sutera to their Patroness takes place, a moment of great spiritual intensity. The celebrations also include the blessing of children born during the year and the blessing of scapulars, a symbol of Carmelite devotion.
In the days preceding July 16th, the carmeliadi take place—evenings of religious-themed games open to the entire community and people of all ages: an occasion of joy and gathering that prepares for the main feast. At the end of the celebrations, the sky above the cliff lights up with the inevitable fireworks display, cheered on by the entire town. The festival is so deeply rooted in local identity that many Sutera natives living abroad return specifically to the village to participate, renewing the bond with their roots.
Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Sutera dates back to the presence of the Carmelite Fathers, who, according to tradition, arrived as early as the Middle Ages. The Carmine Church, now the heart of the festival, houses valuable works including a statue of the Immaculate Virgin from 1696 by the sculptor Andrea Bisagna from Palermo and a white marble Madonna of Succour from 1503. Our Lady of Mount Carmel was proclaimed Patroness of Sutera, and her feast day, set for July 16th, has become the town's defining identity event, alongside other local calendar traditions like the feast of Saint Paolino and the Living Nativity in the RÃ bato district.
Visiting Sutera during the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival means immersing yourself in the authentic atmosphere of an inland Sicilian village, among alleys, historic churches, and the scent of rosemary, while discovering local products such as honey, almonds, and traditional sweets. The festival combines the religious dimension with the community spirit, offering residents and visitors an intense experience of faith, tradition, and hospitality.
The 2026 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Sutera is set for July 16th, following the tradition that sees the town honor its patroness. This year, the heart of the festival will again be the procession of the statue from the Church of Maria SS. del Carmelo to the Church of Sant'Agata, with the rite of entrustment of the Sutera people to the Virgin, while the carmeliadi will return in the preceding days, followed by the customary fireworks. The full program, including times and events, is currently being published: it is recommended to check details with the Municipality of Sutera and the parish.
Sutera is located in the Sicilian hinterland, in the province of Caltanissetta, at an altitude of about 590 meters. By car, it can be reached via the SS 189 (Agrigento-Caltanissetta) and internal provincial roads; the nearest train stations and airports are in Caltanissetta, Agrigento, and Palermo.
The patronal feast is celebrated on July 16th, with the 'carmeliadi' held in the preceding days. The procession takes place on the afternoon of the feast day.
