A Marian devotion spanning centuries

The Madonna della Libera Festival is one of the most cherished religious events in Mongiuffi Melia, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina nestled in the green Ghiodaro Valley, in the Peloritani Mountains. Comprising the two settlements of Melia and Mongiuffi, the town guards a sanctuary on the scenic Colle Mongilone that has drawn pilgrims from across the province for over a century.

The Sanctuary on Colle Mongilone

The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Libera stands in a dominant position, overlooking the surrounding countryside and mountains. Construction began in the early 20th century, and the building opened for worship in 1913, later being completed with the addition of the bell tower. Inside, the sanctuary preserves stained glass windows, mosaics, statues, and paintings that make it one of the most beloved religious centers in the Messina area. The venerated wooden statue of the Virgin was carved in 1894 by the artist Francesco Lo Turco from Gallodoro.

Byzantine origins and tradition

The cult of the Madonna della Libera has roots in an ancient tradition: according to popular lore, the original image was found on the beach of Rodi Garganico, in Puglia, after the fall of Constantinople to the Turks, which led to the hypothesis of its Byzantine origin. The Virgin is depicted wearing a red robe and a green mantle with golden edges, her right hand raised and marked with the stigmata of the cross, while her left hand supports the Baby Jesus.

The festival and the procession

Every year, between May and July, thousands of faithful and pilgrims reach the sanctuary to venerate the statue of the Virgin, which remains there until the first Sunday of July, the day of the solemn feast. During the celebration days, the faithful participate in masses and the evocative Saturday evening procession, which travels through the surrounding countryside amidst hymns, prayers, and illuminations. It is a moment of deep community participation, where the spiritual dimension intertwines with the valley's popular traditions.

The Madonna della Libera Festival is not just a religious rite, but an occasion that brings back emigrants and visitors, strengthening the bonds of a small Peloritani community around its identity. Between mountain landscapes, traditional flavors of north-eastern Sicily, and the hospitality of the locals, the festival represents one of the most authentic events of the religious summer in the Messina area.
