About Santa Maria del Carmelo City Palio

For over twenty years, the Santa Maria del Carmelo City Palio has lit up the summer in Santa Teresa di Riva, on the Ionian coast of Messina. Seven city districts compete in around fifty disciplines, ranging from traditional sports to creative games, involving hundreds of participants of all ages. This recreational and sporting event, born in 1994, serves as a prelude to the celebrations in honor of the Madonna del Carmelo, the town's patron saint.

The neighborhood Palio of Santa Teresa di Riva

The Santa Maria del Carmelo City Palio is one of the most cherished events in Santa Teresa di Riva, a town on the Ionian coast in the province of Messina, Sicily. Established in 1994 as a recreational and sporting festival to launch the Ionian summer, it has evolved over the years into a defining event that unites the entire community through the friendly rivalry between its districts.

Seven districts in competition

The heart of the Palio is the competition between the seven districts that represent the various quarters of the municipality: Barracca, Boccavento, Centro, Ciumaredda, Portosalvo, Sacra Famiglia, and Sirena. Each team showcases its own colors, chants, and choreography, fueling a playful yet passionate rivalry that lasts throughout the event.

Around fifty disciplines

The sports program includes about fifty disciplines, ranging from traditional folk games to more innovative and creative challenges. Activities span from table football to team tournaments, skill-based competitions, themed challenges, and even original trials like the "Palio Express," where participants must find their way back from a Sicilian town relying solely on their own resourcefulness. Each edition engages hundreds of participants of all ages in a festive atmosphere that brings the town's squares and streets to life.

Between sport and devotion

The Palio is organized by A.S.D. Mercury in collaboration with the parish and the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Carmelo. The event takes place between the second half of June and early July, concluding just before the patronal feast of the Madonna del Carmelo, celebrated on July 16th: sport thus becomes a joyful prelude to the popular devotion that has characterized the local community for centuries.

An event for the whole community

Beyond the competitions, the Palio calendar is enriched with musical evenings, performances, and social gatherings that transform Santa Teresa di Riva into a grand summer stage. It is an opportunity for residents and vacationers alike to experience the authentic spirit of an Ionian town that makes participation and neighborhood belonging a hallmark of its identity.
