The patronal feast of the Botteghelle district and the evocative sea procession of the Madonna's statue
Overlooking the Ionian Sea just a few kilometers from Messina, the small town of Roccalumera preserves in its Botteghelle district one of the most deeply rooted devotions on the coast: the Madonna del Carmelo Festival, patron saint of the local parish. Every year, around July 16, the community gathers around the statue of the Virgin of Carmel for several days of celebrations that weave together liturgy, popular tradition, and the town's profound bond with the sea.
The heart of the festival is the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo, built in 1938 and solemnly consecrated on July 14, 1940, becoming an independent parish in 1943. The building, with three naves featuring columns and a pink marble altar, houses a fine wooden crucifix and the statue of the Madonna who, standing on clouds with the Child in her arms, offers the Carmelite scapular to the faithful. It is this statue that is carried in procession during the festival days.
The festival is traditionally divided into three main events:
This is the most anticipated and spectacular moment: the statue of the Madonna is embarked and accompanied by dozens of boats parading along the Ionian coast. The marine pageant departs from the waters in front of the church, reaches nearby Nizza di Sicilia, and returns to the Pagliara stream, on the border with the municipality of Furci Siculo, amidst a triumph of faithful who arrive from neighboring towns as well.
Included in the calendar of events of Roccalumera, also known as the "city of folklore," the festival represents an opportunity to experience the identity of this seaside village in the Ionian Sicily, in the province of Messina, where Marian devotion merges with the culture of the sea and the life of fishing communities.
The 2026 Madonna del Carmelo Festival will be held in Roccalumera, in the Botteghelle district, from July 16 to 19, 2026, as indicated by the municipal events calendar. The celebration will follow the traditional format: the solemn procession of the statue through the parish streets, the evocative "Blue Night with Mary," and, as a finale, the moving sea procession with the blessing of the boats and fishermen. The detailed liturgical program, including service and event times, will be published by the Santa Maria del Carmelo Parish in the weeks leading up to the festival.
The celebrations take place in the Botteghelle district of Roccalumera (ME), with the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo as the epicenter. The sea procession covers the stretch of Ionian coast between Roccalumera, Nizza di Sicilia, and the Pagliara stream.
By car: A18 Messina-Catania motorway, Roccalumera exit. By train: the Roccalumera-Mandanici station is served by the Messina-Catania-Siracusa Ionian line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away.
