About Ostia Clean-Up

Ostia Clean-Up is the annual beach cleanup event held every March to celebrate the anniversary of the environmental volunteer association founded in Ostia in 2019. Volunteers of all ages gather on the beach near the fishermen's canal, in front of Molo X, to clear the sand of plastic, cigarette butts, and micro-waste washed up by storms. It is a free event open to everyone, combining ecological commitment, environmental education, and a sense of community on the coast of the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region.

An anniversary celebrated by picking up litter

In Ostia, the seaside district of the Municipality of Rome overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ostia Clean-Up ODV association has chosen an unusual way to celebrate its founding: every year in March, a collective beach cleanup marks the anniversary of the group, which was born in 2019 from the initiative of young people connected to the Roman coast and driven by respect for the sea and the environment. It is not a concert or a traditional party, but a morning of shared work where dozens of volunteers turn the care of the territory into a community moment.

Where and how it takes place

The meeting point is on the beach next to the fishermen's canal, in front of the Molo X headquarters, the youth space that the association manages in the heart of the coast. Equipped with gloves, bags, and tongs, participants comb through the sand, collecting what winter storms have deposited: plastic bottles and fragments, cigarette butts, cotton swab sticks, glass, forgotten objects, and above all microplastics, the most difficult enemy to intercept. The sorted waste is then collected by AMA, the environmental company of the Municipality of Rome, a recurring partner of the initiative.

Much more than a cleanup

The anniversary is an opportunity to share the association's activities throughout the year. Ostia Clean-Up does not just organize beach cleanings: it carries out educational projects like the Bibliot-eco (ecological library), lessons and workshops in schools, PCTO paths for students, and awareness campaigns aimed at citizens of all ages. The beach cleanup thus becomes a symbolic and educational gesture, reminding us how individual action can be part of a larger change, according to the association's motto: "The important thing is to act, now".

Water at the center

It is no coincidence that the event falls close to March 22nd: the anniversary is intertwined with the United Nations World Water Day, and the morning often concludes with a symbolic water toast that gives voice to the group's mission. The bond with the sea, an identity element of Ostia, runs through all the association's activities, which are committed to protecting the coastline and the pine forest.

An event open to everyone

Participation is free and open to all: all you need is comfortable shoes, a spirit of collaboration, and a desire to be useful. Children, families, students, and curious individuals can join the volunteers and experience active citizenship on the coast of Rome, in the Lazio region. The Ostia Clean-Up anniversary is now one of the most heartfelt environmental events on the Roman coast, capable of turning effort into a celebration and the beach into an open-air classroom.

Ostia Clean-Up — edition 2026

On Sunday, March 22, 2026, Ostia Clean-Up celebrated its seventh anniversary with a beach cleanup next to the fishermen's canal, in front of Molo X. Despite bad weather, about forty volunteers collected 70 kilos of waste in just over two hours, coinciding with World Water Day.

Seven years of commitment on the coast

The seventh edition of the Ostia Clean-Up anniversary took place on Sunday, March 22, 2026, on the beach next to the fishermen's canal, in front of the Molo X headquarters. Despite adverse weather conditions, about 40 volunteers participated in the morning cleanup, which lasted about two hours.

The day's results

The collection allowed for the removal of 70 kilos of waste, including 270 cigarette butts, 648 cotton swab sticks, about 3.5 kilos of glass, baking trays, plastic toys, and plush dolls, in addition to the inevitable microplastics fragmented by the storms. The sorted material was handed over to AMA for collection.

Water and community

The event coincided with the United Nations World Water Day and concluded with a water toast. Vice President Anita Remedia, CEO Isabel Guadano Procesi, and Treasurer Francesco Chiappetta retraced the seven years of the association's activity, from school projects to awareness campaigns.
