An Easter market nestled in the medieval alleys of one of Italy's most beautiful villages
Every year, on the morning of Holy Saturday, the historic center of Chiusa/Klausen transforms into the stage for the Ostermarkt, the Easter market that officially welcomes spring. Nestled along the Isarco River and overlooked by the Sabiona Monastery, the village of Chiusa is a member of the Borghi più belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) club and offers an exceptional setting: cobblestone alleys, porticoes, wrought-iron signs, and painted facades that tell centuries of mercantile and artistic history along the ancient Brenner route.
For the occasion, the streets and squares of the center fill with stalls: depending on the year, there are between fifty and seventy, spread throughout the historic village. The selection is vast and carefully curated, with a strong focus on authenticity:
During the market, the shops in the center of Chiusa remain open, allowing visitors to combine a stroll through the stalls with shopping in the village's historic boutiques.
The atmosphere is enlivened by the notes of the Chiusa town band, which performs in the central squares throughout the morning. The star of the show is the Easter Bunny, who roams the streets handing out colorful eggs and inviting both adults and children to join in the "Pecken", a traditional game where two players take turns tapping hard-boiled eggs against each other until one breaks: the winner is the one whose egg remains intact. It is a simple and joyful ritual, deeply rooted in South Tyrolean popular culture, making the market a beloved event especially for families.
The Easter Market takes place in the Municipality of Chiusa (Klausen), in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in the heart of Trentino-South Tyrol. Its timing on Holy Saturday makes it an excellent opportunity to combine a visit to the village with a spring outing among the vineyards of the Isarco Valley, riverside walks, and the discovery of local artistic heritage, from the Civic Museum to the Sabiona monastery complex that watches over the town from atop its cliff.
On Saturday, April 4, 2026, for Holy Saturday, the historic center of Chiusa/Klausen hosted the traditional Easter Market from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
