The mountain Christmas market in the historic square of Castelrotto
The Kastelruther Bergweihnacht is the Christmas market (Weihnachtsmarkt) of the municipality of Castelrotto/Kastelruth, one of the most picturesque villages in South Tyrol, located on the Sciliar Plateau at the foot of the Dolomites, in the province of Bolzano and the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year during Advent, the town's historic square (the Dorfplatz) transforms into an intimate Christmas village, open on weekends and public holidays.
Unlike large city markets, the Bergweihnacht in Castelrotto focuses on an intimate and traditional atmosphere: here, you will find neither stress nor frenzy, but rather a climate of warmth and reflection. Local farmers, hoteliers, and artisans open their stalls, showcasing handmade products.
The market is also an opportunity to discover the flavors of the South Tyrolean winter. Among the stalls, you can enjoy hot mulled wine, tea, the typical South Tyrolean Zelten, gingerbread, and above all the famous Kastelruther Krapfen, the traditional local pastries filled with dried pears, plum jam, cinnamon, or chestnut cream.
The entertainment program accompanies the opening days with performances by brass bands, horn players, choirs, and singers, as well as moments dedicated to children with activities, workshops, and the Santa Claus parade. The most anticipated event is the Christmas concert by the Kastelruther Spatzen, the famous folk music group originally from Castelrotto, which every year hosts an evening of Christmas carols at the Telfen tennis center.
The Kastelruther Bergweihnacht is the ideal destination for those seeking an authentic, village-scale Christmas market immersed in the alpine landscape of the Sciliar. An experience that combines tradition, local craftsmanship, and the warm hospitality of the South Tyrolean mountain people.
The Kastelruther Bergweihnacht 2026 opens its doors on Friday, November 28, and continues until Sunday, December 27, 2026, with openings concentrated on Advent weekends and public holidays (specifically the weekends of December 6-8, 13-15, 20-22, and 25-26, as well as the morning of December 24). The usual hours are from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with early closing at 3:00 PM on Christmas Eve.
As per tradition, the historic square hosts craft stalls, wooden nativity scenes, and South Tyrolean culinary specialties, from mulled wine to Kastelruther Krapfen. The highlight is the Christmas concert by the Kastelruther Spatzen, scheduled for Saturday, December 19, 2026, at the Telfen tennis center: doors open at 3:00 PM and the concert begins at 5:00 PM, featuring Christmas carols, the Castelrotto male quartet, and a reading of the Christmas story by Norbert Rier. In the afternoon, an autograph session with the group is scheduled at the market.
By car from the north: take the A22 exit Chiusa/Klausen, then follow signs for Castelrotto (approx. 17 km). From the south: take the A22 exit Bolzano Nord, follow signs for Alpe di Siusi (approx. 22 km). By train to Bolzano or Bressanone station, then continue by bus (line 170 from Bolzano, approx. 45 minutes).
The market is open on Advent weekends and public holidays, generally from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM (from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on December 24th). Admission is free.
During peak season, the historic center is closed to private traffic from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM: we recommend using the parking lots at the edge of the village and the shuttle buses. With the South Tyrol Guest Pass, some bus connections are free.
