About Orta Loreto Carnival

For over forty years, the village of Orta Loreto in Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino has transformed into a grand open-air stage. The Orta Loreto Grand Carnival features five hand-built allegorical floats, accompanied by costumed groups, choreographed performances, and music. It is a popular festival involving nearly a thousand people, including builders and performers, drawing thousands of visitors from the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area and the entire province of Salerno.

A village carnival that grew big

Orta Loreto is a small village in the municipality of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese. Every winter, however, for a few days, it becomes the center of gravity for the Campanian Carnival: narrow streets, courtyards, and small squares fill with massive floats, bands of costumed performers, and families arriving from neighboring towns. The Orta Loreto Grand Carnival was born in 1982 from the vision of local families—the Pepes, the Grimaldis, the Rossis—and has never stopped since, reaching its 44th edition in 2026.

What strikes first-time visitors is the disproportion between the size of the village and the scale of the event: nearly a thousand people are involved, from those who build the floats to those who parade. It is not a professional event imposed from above, but a collective effort that occupies the winter months in the village's warehouses and garages.

Five associations, five floats

The backbone of the festival consists of five historic associations united under the Orta Loreto Grand Carnival association, each designing and building its own allegorical float. In 2026, the following participated:

  • Sant'Antonio AssociationChe rumore fa la felicità (What sound does happiness make)
  • La Vecchia Guardia AssociationCiao Darwin
  • Semplice Divertimento AssociationL'incanto della selva (The enchantment of the forest)
  • New Generation AssociationL'incontro dei giganti, la forza della pace (The meeting of giants, the power of peace)
  • Amici del Carnevale Association...in viaggio verso lo spazio (...journeying into space)

The themes change every year, blending television satire, fantasy imagery, and civic messages. Each float brings its own dance troupe, with choreography rehearsed for weeks and soundtracks accompanying the parade along the entire route.

The parades

The schedule spans several days, typically two Sundays and Shrove Tuesday, with morning and afternoon departures. The routes cross Via Giuseppe Mazzini, the village's commercial heart, arriving at Piazza De' Ruggiero, and also touch the San Lorenzo district. The final day traditionally includes a trip to the nearby town center of Pagani, where the Orta Loreto floats parade along Corso Ettore Padovano, Via Martani, and Via Cesarano: a de facto twinning between two carnival events of the Agro that multiplies the audience.

A popular rite of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese

In Campania, Carnival is not just masks and confetti: it is a moment of collective identity, especially in the towns of the Agro, where the peasant tradition of the Sarno plain coexists with a strong neighborhood association culture. In Orta Loreto, the competition between the five associations is friendly but deeply felt: for months, people discuss the most successful float, the most original choreography, and the group that brought the most performers to the streets. The Municipality of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino supports the event every year, which has become the most defining event of the local calendar.

What to expect

  • Large, handcrafted allegorical floats made of papier-mâché and recycled materials
  • Costumed groups and dance choreography along the entire route
  • Live music and sound systems following the floats
  • A very family-friendly audience, with many children in costume
  • Stalls selling carnival sweets, confetti, and streamers

When to go

Dates follow the movable carnival calendar: between late January and early March depending on the year. In 2026, the parades took place from February 8th to 17th. It is advisable to arrive well in advance of the indicated departure time: traffic in the village is closed, and parking spaces along the main streets fill up quickly.

Orta Loreto Carnival — edition 2026

The 44th edition of the Orta Loreto Grand Carnival took place from February 8th to 17th, 2026, with three days of parades between the village of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino and the center of Pagani. Five allegorical floats, created by the Sant'Antonio, La Vecchia Guardia, Semplice Divertimento, New Generation, and Amici del Carnevale associations, crossed Via Mazzini and Piazza De' Ruggiero, accompanied by choreography and costumed groups.

2026 Edition: 44 years of carnival

Born in 1982, the Orta Loreto Grand Carnival reached the milestone of forty-four editions in 2026. The program was presented on January 31st in the council chamber of the Municipality of Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino, in the presence of the mayor and councilors, confirming the administration's support for an event that involves nearly a thousand people between builders and performers.

The parades were concentrated over three days: Sunday, February 8th, Sunday, February 15th, and Shrove Tuesday, February 17th, with the usual morning trip to the town center of Pagani. Each float took to the streets with its own dance troupe and soundtrack, for a procession that crossed the village from Via Giuseppe Mazzini to Piazza De' Ruggiero.
