The longest-running jazz festival in Puglia, set in the Dauni Mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Orsara Jazz Festival is one of Italy's longest-running jazz events and the oldest in Puglia. Founded in 1990 in Orsara di Puglia, a small village in the Dauni Mountains in the province of Foggia, the festival has spanned over three decades, bringing great improvised music to one of the most authentic and off-the-beaten-path territories in Southern Italy. The event is organized by the Orsara Musica Association, a cultural landmark for the town, with artistic direction by Lucio Ferrara.
The beating heart of the festival is Largo San Michele, a charming square in the historic center of Orsara di Puglia that transforms into an open-air stage every summer. The village's compact size and the intimate atmosphere of the evenings create a direct, close connection between musicians and the audience, far removed from the logistics of large-scale mass events. This combination of artistic quality and local warmth makes Orsara a beloved destination for jazz enthusiasts from across the region.
Despite the village's modest size, the festival has hosted world-class musicians over the years, alternating established masters of the international scene with emerging talents and original projects. The programming ranges from classic jazz to contemporary sounds, with ensembles varying from soloists to large groups. Throughout its long history, Orsara has hosted hundreds of concerts and musicians from all over the world, solidifying its reputation well beyond the borders of Puglia.
Beyond the evening concerts, the Orsara Jazz Festival has always been a laboratory for musical education. The days begin with masterclasses and international seminars held by guest artists, dedicated to students and young musicians. The program is completed by installations and exhibitions such as the Jazz Gallery and the display of the festival's historic posters, set up at the local community library, which tell the story of an event that has become part of Orsara's cultural heritage.
One of the hallmarks of the Orsara Jazz Festival is free admission to concerts, a choice that reflects the popular and inclusive vocation of the event. The festival is a precious opportunity to discover Orsara di Puglia and the Dauni Mountains, amidst local gastronomy, traditions, and the hilly landscape of the Foggia Apennines, in a marriage of high-level music and cultural tourism that enhances the entire territory of inland Puglia.
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Orsara Jazz Festival have not yet been announced. Given the historical continuity of the event, organized by the Orsara Musica Association in Orsara di Puglia (province of Foggia), a new edition is expected in the summer of 2026 in Largo San Michele. Official information regarding the calendar, artists, and seminars will be published on the website orsaramusica.it and on the festival's social media channels. This page will be updated as soon as details for the edition become available.
