The masquerade festival of Orio Canavese, featuring the Count and Countess, drums, and cotechino
In the heart of the Canavese region, just a few kilometers from Ivrea and its famous carnival, the small town of Orio Canavese (Province of Turin, Piedmont) hosts its most cherished annual event: the Orio Historical Carnival. This festival blends the lighthearted spirit of a village carnival with the dignity of a true costume re-enactment, transforming the historic center into an open-air stage.
It all began in 1983, when two masked characters kicked off the festivities. However, it was in 1996 that the carnival took on its "historical" identity: the figures of Count Carlo Sallier de la Tour and his wife, Countess Marta, were introduced—nobles who, according to tradition, resided in the Orio castle in the late 19th century and promoted local viticulture. Around them, the "I Conti di Orio" Historical Group was formed, now boasting about forty members: the Notary, the Grand Chancellor, guards, the nanny, the coachman, pages, drummers, and flag-wavers representing the four districts of Orio.
The Orio Historical Carnival is more than just a parade; it is a community celebration. The program alternates between workshops and readings for children, a grand masquerade parade through the village streets accompanied by the roll of drums, and numerous social gatherings. On Carnival Sunday, the historical figures march alongside folk and allegorical groups, while locals offer tastings and banquets along the route, in keeping with the traditional hospitality of the Canavese region.
As with any self-respecting carnival, gastronomy plays a starring role in Orio. Not to be missed is the traditional Sunday breakfast with cotechino and mulled wine, and above all, the distribution of pork rinds and beans (the famous "fasoj"), a signature dish that recalls the community's ancient peasant roots and brings the festivities to a convivial close.
Included in the rich calendar of Canavese and Piedmontese carnivals, the Orio Canavese Historical Carnival is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic village, far from the main tourist flows, where the festival is still organized by the locals themselves. Admission to all events is free.
The thirtieth edition of the Orio Historical Carnival brought the center of Orio Canavese to life over the weekend of February 28th and March 1st, 2026. A special edition that celebrated thirty years of the event's history and the work of the "I Conti di Orio" Historical Group.
The festival confirmed its most beloved traditions: workshops and readings for the little ones, the grand masquerade parade through the village streets to the rhythm of drums, with the Count, the Countess, and their entire entourage. On Sunday, the traditional breakfast with cotechino and mulled wine was a highlight, while the customary distribution of pork rinds and beans brought the community together for the final moment, in the spirit of Canavese conviviality.
All events are free to attend. Detailed schedules are provided by the organizers in the days leading up to the event.
