The open-air festival that kicks off the summer music season in South Tyrol, set in the Gaul gorge in Lana.
Open Air Gaul is one of the most long-standing and beloved musical events in South Tyrol. Established in 1994, it has been opening the region's summer festival season for over three decades, drawing rock, punk, and live music fans every year at the end of May. The setting is among the most spectacular imaginable: the Gaulschlucht, a deep gorge carved by the Valsura stream just a few hundred meters from the center of Lana, a municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-South Tyrol.
The event is organized by the Jugendzentrum Jux Lana, the local youth center, thanks to the dedication of a large group of volunteers, an organizing committee, and the so-called "Schinter-Trupp". Admission has always been free: a choice that makes the festival accessible to everyone and a cornerstone for the community. Proceeds from food and drink sales are reinvested into the Jux musical program, particularly the monthly "Stromkeller" concerts, thus supporting the local music scene throughout the year.
The program ranges from rock to punk, from tribute bands to the traditional music of the morning Frühschoppen, and from acoustic sets to high-energy late-night projects. The 2,000 sqm area hosts multiple live acts, while the atmosphere is typical of South Tyrolean festivals: informal, welcoming, and suitable for a public of all ages (from 0 to 99 years old).
The Gaulschlucht is located about 450 meters from the center of Lana. To ensure safe participation, the N201 Nightliner bus service operates during the festival with connections from Bolzano and Merano, allowing you to enjoy the evening without worrying about the return trip.
With its thirty-year history, free admission, and the unique natural setting of the gorge, Open Air Gaul is one of the most characteristic events at the start of summer in Lana and throughout South Tyrol.
