The green gold of the Sicani Mountains: tastings, folk music, and the culture of longevity

The Olio Folk Fest is an annual autumn event that transforms Caltabellotta—a charming village perched in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Agrigento—into a showcase for premium extra virgin olive oil. The star of the show is the Biancolilla, a native cultivar that produces an oil with a delicate aromatic profile, serving as the authentic green gold of this corner of Sicily. The festival was created to promote this iconic local product and the entire regional olive oil supply chain, blending taste, culture, and folk music.
The program features guided tastings of new-harvest oil paired with local bread, live cooking shows, and in-depth sessions on the Mediterranean diet, alongside folk music performances and traditional displays that bring the streets and squares of the historic center to life. Local wineries and olive mills open their doors to visitors, while artisans and producers share skills passed down through generations. The event is part of the broader autumn calendar, "The Food Paths of Long Life," which links Caltabellotta to other Sicani municipalities like Lucca Sicula.
What makes this festival truly special is its connection to longevity: Caltabellotta has been designated one of the world's Blue Zones, areas with the highest concentration of people living into their nineties and beyond. The edition dedicated to this theme, the "Longevity Edition," featured conferences on the relationship between extra virgin olive oil, the Mediterranean diet, and a long life, as well as a photography exhibition titled "Faces of Longevity" dedicated to the village's elders and intergenerational cooking shows between grandparents and grandchildren. During this event, the village also unveiled its "Visit Caltabellotta" tourism brand and received the "City of Oil" banner.
Visiting the Olio Folk Fest is also the perfect opportunity to explore Caltabellotta, a town that dominates the Platani Valley with its Norman castle and medieval alleyways. Organized by the Triokala association in collaboration with the Municipality of Caltabellotta and supported by the Magazzolo Platani Development Society, the festival is an invitation to experience the most authentic side of Sicily—a place where time seems to stand still and the quality of life remains deeply rooted in the land, its products, and its traditions.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Olio Folk Fest have not yet been announced. The event traditionally takes place in October in the historic center of Caltabellotta, featuring tastings of Biancolilla extra virgin olive oil, live cooking shows, folk music, and sessions dedicated to the Mediterranean diet and longevity.
The program will be published by the organizers, the Triokala association and the Municipality of Caltabellotta, closer to the event. Check back soon for dates and further details.
Caltabellotta is located in the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Agrigento, about 20 km from Sciacca. By car, take the SS115 to Sciacca, then continue on the SP37 toward the village. The nearest airports are Palermo (Punta Raisi) and Trapani-Birgi, both approximately a two-hour drive away.
The festival usually takes place in October, coinciding with the olive harvest and the production of the new oil.
Access to the festival areas in the historic center is generally free; some tastings and workshops may require a fee or prior booking.
Wear comfortable shoes for the steep alleys of the village and take the opportunity to visit the castle and enjoy the panoramic views over the Platani Valley.
