About O' Focarone 'e Sant'Antuono

Every year in mid-January, Domicella gathers around its massive bonfire: O' Focarone 'e Sant'Antuono. Lit in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot by the Pro Loco Domicella with the support of the local municipality, the pile of brushwood is assembled with almost artistic precisionโ€”hence the name 'Artistic Bonfire'. At 7:00 PM, the fire is blessed, and the evening continues with food stalls, traditional Irpinian dishes, and local wine, creating a festive atmosphere that brings the whole town together until late.

The bonfire that lights up the winter in the Lauro Valley

In the heart of the Irpinian winter, when days are short and mist rises from the woods, the small municipality of Domicella, in the province of Avellino, gathers around a massive, multi-meter-high woodpile. This is O' Focarone 'e Sant'Antuono, the great bonfire lit in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot, the saint whom popular devotion in Southern Italy inextricably links to fire. For the entire community, this event marks the symbolic beginning of the winter festival cycle and the start of the carnival season.

An ancient tradition shared across Campania

The Saint Anthony bonfires on January 17th are not an isolated custom; they span all of Campania and Irpinia, from Solofra to Nusco, and throughout the Nola and Vesuvius areas. The roots are ancient, predating Christian devotion: at the end of the winter solstice, great fires were lit to welcome back the light and symbolically purify homes, fields, and animals. The Church later linked this ritual to Saint Anthony Abbot, protector of domestic animals and livestock, who, according to legend, stole fire from the devil to give it to humanity.

The "Artistic Bonfire": a collective masterpiece

In Domicella, the festival has earned its own name over the years, Focarone Artistico, which speaks volumes about how the town experiences it. Preparation begins in the morning: the brushwood is not simply piled up but stacked with artistic care, interlocking piece by piece to form a regular, imposing, and almost scenographic structure. It is a collective effort involving Pro Loco volunteers and the town's youth, turning the anticipation of the lighting into an essential part of the celebration.

The blessing ritual

The central moment arrives with the darkness. At 7:00 PM, the fire is blessed and then lit: the flames rise rapidly, illuminating the square and drawing applause from the crowd. People linger around the bonfire to stay warm and chat, following a ritual that repeats identically from generation to generation. The celebration continues until late, in an atmosphere of joy and conviviality that is perhaps the most authentic trait of these events.

Food stalls

As in every popular Campanian festival, food plays a leading role. Around the bonfire area, the Pro Loco sets up numerous food stalls dedicated to tasting traditional local dishes, accompanied by local wine. In the 2025 edition, the absolute star was the Neapolitan soffritto, a spicy, rustic dish of Parthenopean cuisine, served piping hot with bread: the perfect comfort food for a January evening outdoors.

  • Traditional Irpinian and Neapolitan dishes
  • Local wine from the Lauro Valley and Irpinia
  • Tastings served near the bonfire until late in the evening

Domicella and the Lauro Valley

With fewer than two thousand inhabitants, Domicella is a village nestled in a wooded basin on the edge of the Lauro Valley, the last strip of the Avellino province overlooking the Naples area. This border position is clearly reflected in the festival: the dialect, the devotion to Saint Anthony, and the cuisine tell a story of a culture halfway between the Irpinian hinterland and the Vesuvius area. For those visiting the Campania Region off-season, the bonfire is a rare opportunity to witness a popular tradition lived by residents rather than staged for tourism.

Organizers

The event is promoted by Pro Loco Domicella APS with the patronage of the Municipality of Domicella, the same association that manages other town events throughout the year. The event is included in the Province of Avellino circuit via the Sistema Irpinia portal, which collects the Saint Anthony Abbot bonfires of the territory every January.

O' Focarone 'e Sant'Antuono โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of O' Focarone 'e Sant'Antuono was held in Domicella on Saturday, January 17, the exact day of the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, at Villa Giovanni Paolo II. Organized by the Pro Loco Domicella with the support of the municipality, the day began in the morning with the artistic assembly of the woodpile, leading to the blessing of the fire at 7:00 PM and continuing until late with food stalls, traditional dishes, and local wine.

January 17, 2026: Winter lights up

For the 2026 edition, the Pro Loco Domicella returned the festival to its canonical date, January 17, the day the Church celebrates Saint Anthony Abbot and when all of Campania lights its bonfires. Falling on a Saturday, it allowed the event to be experienced in its fullest form, with the preparation of the pile spread throughout the day.

From the pile to the blessing

As tradition dictates, from the early hours of the morning, volunteers stacked the brushwood with artistic care, building the structure destined to burn piece by piece. As darkness fell, at 7:00 PM, the moment of the blessing of the bonfire and its lighting arrived, followed by a long evening around the fire.

The party around the fire

Numerous food stalls were set up around the bonfire area, offering tastings of traditional local dishes accompanied by local wine. The event, hosted at Villa Giovanni Paolo II, was held with the patronage of the Municipality of Domicella and was also featured in the Irpinian bonfire calendar of the Province of Avellino's Sistema Irpinia portal.
