The New Year's Eve fire ritual in Gallipoli
Every year, on New Year's Eve, Gallipoli transforms into an open-air theater for the Notte dei Pupi, the ritual through which this Salento town bids farewell to the old year and welcomes the new. Throughout the historic center and the modern city, large papier-mâché puppets are displayed: effigies of weary, hunched old men, sometimes seated or standing, representing the past year and all its burdens.
At the stroke of midnight, the puppets are set on fire in every neighborhood: a purifying and auspicious bonfire that, according to tradition, sweeps away the old to make room for the new. A spirited rivalry ignites among the districts of Gallipoli, as each strives to create the most beautiful and spectacular puppet. Due to its cultural significance, the Notte dei Pupi is inscribed in the Regional Register of Fire Rituals of Puglia.
The puppets are crafted by young local artisans, heirs to the great tradition of Salento papier-mâché, which has its heart in Lecce. Constructing these sculptures is no simple task and begins months before the festival: each puppet is an ephemeral work of art, built with care only to be burned. It is in this paradox—creating to make disappear—that the true poetry of the festival lies.
The Notte dei Pupi is part of the Christmas Lights program organized by the Municipality of Gallipoli, which enlivens the city during Advent with illuminations, markets, and art installations. New Year's Eve combines the bonfire ritual with live music, dancing, and toasts in the squares, featuring local bands and artists. The atmosphere is that of a grand popular festival, drawing both residents and tourists from across Salento.
Located on the Ionian coast in the province of Lecce, Gallipoli is famous for its historic center overlooking the sea, its beaches, and its summer nightlife. With the Notte dei Pupi, however, the "Beautiful City" reveals its more authentic winter face, deeply rooted in the community's artisan and folk traditions. Witnessing the lighting of the puppets on New Year's Eve means experiencing a different kind of celebration, suspended between art, folklore, and devotion to fire.
For New Year's Eve 2026, the Notte dei Pupi confirmed its status as the highlight of the Gallipoli festivities. On the evening of December 31, 2025, the large papier-mâché puppets were already on display in the various neighborhoods, ready for the midnight ritual, while the city celebrated with live music, including the band Vega 80 performing the greatest hits of the eighties and nineties, dancing, and toasts in the squares.
Due to a yellow weather alert issued by the regional Civil Protection for strong wind gusts, the Municipality of Gallipoli, after consulting with security and public order authorities, postponed the lighting of the puppets to the evening of January 1, 2026, at 9:00 PM, to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors. The bonfire of the puppets thus officially opened the new year.
The Notte dei Pupi takes place in the various neighborhoods of Gallipoli (LE) on the night of December 31st, with the puppets being set on fire at the stroke of midnight. In case of severe weather alerts, the lighting may be postponed to January 1st.
Gallipoli can be reached by car via the Lecce-Gallipoli expressway, by train via the Ferrovie del Sud Est (Gallipoli station), and by bus connections from the provincial capital. The historic center is a pedestrian zone.
The event is free and held outdoors. For the updated program, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Gallipoli.
