The touring opera festival that chooses Borgo Valsugana for its premiere
The Valsugana and Vigolana International Festival is a touring opera series that travels through the municipalities of the Valsugana valley and the Vigolana Plateau, in the province of Trento, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Among the key locations is the Municipality of Borgo Valsugana, the historic capital of the lower Valsugana overlooking the Brenta River, which every year hosts some of the most anticipated events on the calendar, including the world premiere of the season's operatic production.
Conceived and produced by the Belcanto Academy APS under the artistic direction of soprano Francesca Micarelli, the festival transforms squares, ancient parish churches, castles, and auditoriums into stages for opera, bringing the general public closer to a heritage often perceived as distant. The formula is as simple as it is ambitious: all events are free of charge and feature young international artists selected for the Belcanto Academy Opera Studio advanced training program.
In Borgo Valsugana, the festival usually presents a concert entrusted to the Young OperaLab Orchestra, the festival's youth ensemble, where singers and instrumentalists perform arias, duets, and famous pages from the great repertoire. But it is above all here, in the heart of the valley, that the festival chooses to raise the curtain for the first time on its major annual operatic production, before taking it on tour to other municipalities in the region.
The festival involves several of the most evocative locations in eastern Trentino: in addition to Borgo Valsugana, it visits Levico Terme, Pergine Valsugana, Grigno, Roncegno Terme, Castel Ivano, Tezze, Castello Tesino, Calliano in the Vallagarina valley, and the Vigolana Plateau. The festival is organized in collaboration with local municipal administrations and with the support of the Autonomous Province of Trento; the festival has been awarded the Eco Eventi Trentino label, testifying to its focus on environmental sustainability.
For opera enthusiasts and those approaching this world for the first time, the Borgo Valsugana stops of the Valsugana and Vigolana International Festival are a rare opportunity to hear great live music in an Alpine setting with a strong identity.
The fifth edition of the Valsugana and Vigolana International Festival consists of thirteen free-admission events, from June to December 2026, under the artistic direction of Francesca Micarelli. The common thread is the 500th anniversary of the Peasants' War, the famous revolt of the rural classes against the clergy and feudal power that marked the territory in the 16th century.
In Borgo Valsugana, the festival offers two events. On November 15, a concert is scheduled with the Young OperaLab Orchestra, the festival's youth ensemble. The highlight, however, comes on December 9, when the town hosts the world premiere of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", in an innovative production set right in Valsugana.
From Borgo Valsugana, the opera then goes on tour in the region, with four additional performances: December 10 in Castel Ivano, December 11 in Tezze, December 12 in Castello Tesino, and December 13 in Pergine Valsugana. The protagonists are the young international artists of the Belcanto Academy Opera Studio 2026, directed by the Belcanto Academy APS with the support of the Autonomous Province of Trento.
The events take place in Borgo Valsugana (province of Trento), the historic capital of the lower Valsugana. As it is a touring festival, it is recommended to check the exact venue and time of each individual concert on the channels of the Belcanto Academy and the Municipality.
Borgo Valsugana is served by the Valsugana railway (Trento-Venice line), with a station in the center, and by the SS47 Valsugana state road. It can be reached from Trento in about 30-35 minutes by car.
All festival events are free of charge.
