A month of festive events featuring traditions, music, and workshops in the heart of the Piana Rotaliana

Every year, between late November and early January, the municipality of Lavis, in the province of Trento, lights up with Christmas in Lavis: an extensive calendar of scattered events that transforms the historic center, the squares, and the hamlets of Pressano and Sorni into a grand festive village. Rather than a single market, it is a true community calendar, built together by the Municipality and the Pro Loco Lavis with the support of numerous local associations.
The program weaves together the most deeply rooted traditions of Trentino-Alto Adige with activities designed for all ages. Highlights include the arrival of Saint Nicholas and the Krampus parade in early December, the scattered nativity scenes set up throughout the town streets and hamlets, the living nativity organized by the local parish, and the Saint Lucy festival with the traditional Strozega. A special role is played by the Potachin elf, who hides in shop windows from December 1st to 24th, turning holiday shopping into a treasure hunt for children.
The soundtrack of the festivities is provided by numerous concerts echoing in the parish church and local halls: from polyphonic and social choirs to the traditional Christmas Concert and the New Year's Concert. Alongside music, there are theatrical performances, children's readings with kamishibai theater, and a film festival at the Municipal Auditorium, organized in collaboration with Nuovo Astra, featuring family films, documentaries, and auteur cinema.
One of the hallmarks of Christmas in Lavis is the immersive tours of the Giardino dei Ciucioi, the historic romantic garden that opens its doors for sensory experiences dedicated to Christmas, as well as many creative workshops for adults and children, ranging from baking Christmas sweets to botanical printing using the cyanotype technique. The spirit of solidarity is also strong, with initiatives like "Your gift for those who are alone" promoted by the Pro Loco together with the Lavistaperta cultural circle.
With its blend of faith, folklore, culture, and participation, Christmas in Lavis is much more than a festival: it is the way an entire Trentino town experiences the time of Advent and the holidays together. Most events are free to attend, while some workshops and visits to the Giardino dei Ciucioi require a contribution and booking, given the limited availability.
Lavis is located a few kilometers north of Trento, along the Brenner road. By car, it can be reached from the San Michele all'Adige-Mezzocorona (A22) motorway exit or from Trento North. By train, the Lavis station is served by the Trento-Malè-Mezzana line (Trentino Trasporti).
Most events are free. Some workshops (starting from 3 euros) and immersive tours of the Giardino dei Ciucioi (approx. 10 euros) have limited capacity and require booking. The film festival at the Auditorium features tickets ranging from 5 to 8 euros.
