Over a month of events spread across libraries, bookstores, and neighborhood venues
The Book and Reading Festival is the most anticipated cultural event of the year in Nichelino, in the Metropolitan City of Turin (Piedmont). Promoted by the City of Nichelino and the Giovanni Arpino Civic Library, the festival transforms the entire city for over a month into a large shared reading space, with dozens of meetings involving libraries, bookstores, civic spaces, neighborhoods, and associations.
The format is that of a widespread festival: events are not concentrated in one place but move from evening to evening between the G. Arpino Library, Open Factory, Libreria Il Cammello, the Informagiovani center, neighborhood committees (Kennedy, Castello), and the Sala Mattei at the Town Hall. It is a way to bring books closer to citizens and to enliven different corners of the city.
A significant part of the calendar is part of the Salone Off, the widespread program of the Turin International Book Fair that brings authors from the major Lingotto event to the municipalities of the metropolitan area. Thanks to this collaboration, Nichelino welcomes nationally and internationally renowned writers, alongside local voices.
More than just a series of presentations, the Book Festival is an opportunity for the Nichelino community to meet: neighborhood committees, independent bookstores, and youth spaces work together to make reading a social moment. Admission to the meetings is free, confirming the popular and accessible nature of the event, which has grown over the years to become a cultural reference for the entire southern Turin area.
For those visiting Nichelino during this period, the Book Festival is the best way to discover the city's cultural life and meet writers up close in an informal and welcoming atmosphere.
The 13th edition was inaugurated on Thursday, April 23 at the G. Arpino Library, in the presence of Mayor Giampiero Tolardo, with Davide Mattiello and his book on Piero Gobetti. The calendar alternated between novels, essays, poetry, and cinema, distributed between the library, Open Factory, Libreria Il Cammello, Informagiovani, neighborhood committees, and the Sala Mattei at the Town Hall.
Numerous events were included in the Salone Off program, including meetings with Manuel Vilas ("Islandia"), Luca Bianchini ("Le ragazze di Tunisi"), Maggie Borrelli, and Emanuele Santi. The grand finale, on Thursday, June 4, closed the festival with a meeting dedicated to the stories of sports champions.
Meetings take place in various spaces in Nichelino: G. Arpino Civic Library (via A. Azzolina 4), Open Factory (via del Castello 15), Libreria Il Cammello (via Stupinigi 4), Informagiovani (via Galimberti 3), Sala Mattei at the Town Hall (Piazza Di Vittorio 1), and neighborhood committees.
Nichelino is a few kilometers south of Turin. By car, it can be reached from the Turin ring road (Nichelino exit). By train, the Nichelino station is served by the SFM2 line; numerous GTT bus lines connect the city with Turin.
Admission to all meetings is free.
