The ancient rite of 'The Heir' in the mountain village of Crognaleto
Clinging to the steep valleys of the Vomano, in the municipality of Crognaleto in the province of Teramo, the mountain village of Nerito preserves one of the most unique carnival traditions in the Abruzzo hinterland. Every year, during the Carnival season, the historic center comes alive with the 'L'Erede' (The Heir) rite, an ancient custom passed down through generations and carefully maintained by the Pro Loco of Nerito APS.
The heart of the festival is a procession of masks and performers that winds through the village, stopping at every house where a firstborn child was born in the past year. At each doorstep, participants perform a series of rituals and theatrical gags that celebrate the secular baptism of the newly arrived heir in a burlesque and boisterous way. It is an ancient and affectionate way for the whole village to welcome its newborns, blending folk theater, local satire, and a strong sense of community.
The parade weaves through the narrow alleys of the village, which fans out from the upper part toward Piazza Indipendenza, and continues with music, dancing, and conviviality until late at night. The masks, improvised costumes, and skits make every edition unique, as the script is renewed based on the families and newborns of the year. It is a community-scale Carnival, far from the large allegorical floats and closer to the rural, mountain soul of the Teramo Apennines.
Nerito, the main village of Crognaleto, stands overlooking the ancient Passo delle Capannelle, within the territory of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Once renowned for its blacksmiths and wrought-iron craftsmanship, the village keeps a rich repertoire of folk customs alive, from the Christmas Fire in the square to the 'L'Erede' Carnival. Experiencing this festival means immersing yourself in the authenticity of the mountain villages of Abruzzo, where traditions are not tourist spectacles but an integral part of village life.
The Nerito Carnival is part of the regional 'Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo' program promoted by UNPLI, which brings together dozens of festivals and parades in the squares of Abruzzo towns every year. It is an opportunity to rediscover the variety and richness of the region's carnival traditions in a single week.
The 2026 Nerito Carnival was held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, starting at 3:00 PM in the historic center of Nerito, the main village of Crognaleto (Teramo). Once again, the Pro Loco of Nerito APS presented the ancient 'L'Erede' rite: a procession of masks and performers traveled through the village, visiting the homes of newborns and celebrating their secular baptism in a burlesque key, with theatrical skits, music, and joy that lasted until late at night.
The event was part of the regional 'Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo' program, promoted by UNPLI, which brought together over thirty carnival events in the squares and streets of Abruzzo towns from February 14 to 21, 2026.
Nerito is the main village of Crognaleto (TE), in the upper Vomano valley. By car, it can be reached via the SS80 'del Gran Sasso d'Italia' road, heading toward Passo delle Capannelle; the nearest motorway exit is on the A24 (Rome-Teramo). Using your own car is recommended: public transport connections in this mountain area are limited.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Nerito during the Carnival period (usually on Shrove Tuesday or the days preceding it). The village streets serve as the stage for the procession.
As this is a winter mountain event, warm clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended for the sloping alleys. Admission to street events is free. For updated information on dates and times, please refer to the Pro Loco of Nerito APS and the UNPLI Abruzzo program.
