An autumn celebration featuring chestnuts, new wine, and bonfires in Fano Adriano

In Fano Adriano, a tiny mountain village nestled within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, the San Martino Chestnut Festival is one of the most cherished autumn events. Linked to the feast of Saint Martin on November 11th, the celebration is deeply rooted in Abruzzo's rural culture, which for centuries has associated this period with the end of field work, the racking of new wine, and the chestnut harvest.
Situated at an altitude of approximately 744 meters at the foot of the Gran Sasso massif and overlooking the Valle Siciliana, Fano Adriano is one of the smallest municipalities in the province of Teramo. In this setting of stone, forests, and pastures, the community gathers for a secular yet deeply identity-driven celebration: dedicating a popular festival to Saint Martin, filled with abundant libations and music, is a well-established practice passed down through generations.
The heart of the festival lies in seasonal produce. In the historic center, roasted and boiled chestnuts are distributed, accompanied by new wine, in accordance with the famous saying "at Saint Martin's, every must becomes wine." There is no shortage of local specialties: sagne and bean soups, the typical cornuti pastries, and mountain cuisine dishes, all served in a spirit of sharing along the village streets and squares.
As evening falls, a large bonfire is lit in the square, while a live folk band accompanies traditional dances and songs. Carved and illuminated pumpkins, tables set up in the streets, and a convivial atmosphere transform the village into a meeting place for residents and visitors alike, who come together to celebrate the change of season.
The Chestnut Festival is also the perfect opportunity to explore Fano Adriano and its hamlet, Cerquaint hamlet of Cerqueto, with the Renaissance church of Saints Peter and Paul and panoramic views of the Gran Sasso. It is an authentic experience of inland Abruzzo, far from the main tourist circuits, where popular tradition remains vibrant and participatory.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the San Martino Chestnut Festival have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the festival is traditionally held in November in Fano Adriano, with the distribution of roasted and boiled chestnuts, new wine, soups, and traditional dishes, the lighting of the bonfire in the square, and live folk music entertainment. This page will be updated with dates and details as soon as they become available.
