A livestock and local produce fair in the shadow of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano

The Millenary Fair of the Assumption is one of the oldest and most enduring events in all of Abruzzo. It takes place every year around August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, on the large esplanade in front of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano, just outside the village of Castel Castagna, a small town in the province of Teramo overlooking the Mavone river valley, at the foot of the Laga Mountains and the Gran Sasso.
Originating as a major gathering for the farming community, the Ronzano fair was historically the place where, according to local memory, the price of livestock was set for the coming year. Even today, the event retains this authentic and popular character, deeply cherished by the people of the Teramo area and known throughout the region.
The religious heart of the fair is the blessing of children, celebrated in the church with the ancient relic of the True Cross housed at Santa Maria di Ronzano. A local legend tells that the reliquary cross was discovered by a farmer while plowing his fields, when his oxen mysteriously knelt at the spot where it was hidden. For centuries, families have brought their little ones before the relic to invoke protection.
Surrounding this ritual is the festive and agricultural side of the event: a cheerful livestock exhibition featuring prize-winning specimens of the prized Marchigiana cattle breed, a market for local agricultural products, an exhibition of field machinery and vintage tractors. There is also a re-enactment of threshing and harvesting, performed with period machinery and traditional methods, which transports visitors back to the atmosphere of peasant civilization.
The setting for the fair is one of the most precious monuments in Abruzzo: the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano, a 12th-century Romanesque church with Apulian influences (already mentioned in a document from 1184) that was once part of a Benedictine monastic complex. Inside, it preserves extraordinary medieval frescoes, including an imposing Last Judgment, and the building has been listed as a national Italian monument since 1902. Visiting the fair is therefore also an opportunity to discover this jewel of art immersed in the Teramo countryside.
With its food stalls, traditional Abruzzese dishes, farm animals, and historical re-enactments, the Millenary Fair of the Assumption is designed for families with children, as well as anyone wishing to experience the rural and devotional roots of this corner of Abruzzo. A dive into the popular culture of the Teramo region, amidst faith, tradition, and genuine flavors.
The Millenary Fair of the Assumption is a staple of Ferragosto in Castel Castagna (Teramo), celebrated in the shadow of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano.
