The Ioanella Alpini hike to the Madonnina delle Nevi, through the rural villages of the Laga mountains
The Madonnina Walk is the hike that brings Ioanella to life every summer, a small mountain hamlet in the municipality of Torricella Sicura, in the province of Teramo. The village, nestled at an altitude of about 720 meters on the foothills of the Laga Mountains, has been documented since around the year 1000 and preserves the church of Santa Maria Assunta and a Monument to the Alpini: the Ioanella Alpini Group itself is the driving force behind this popular walk.
The destination is the Madonnina delle Nevi, a sacred image deeply cherished by the local community, reached on foot along the trails that climb up from the village. The walk thus unites two souls of the territory: the religious and popular one, linked to the Marian cult that characterizes many villages of the Abruzzo Apennines, and the hiking one, which allows you to walk immersed in forests of oak, hornbeam, and maple trees, and in the landscapes of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, with views opening up towards the peaks of the Gran Sasso d'Italia.
The Madonnina Walk is not a large-scale festival, but one of those genuine initiatives that keep the summer of the small Laga villages alive. It is designed for everyone: Alpini, residents, families, and casual hikers who want to share a few hours in the open air, amidst light exertion, conviviality, and a moment of reflection in front of the Madonnina. The event is part of the Torricella Eventi calendar promoted by the Municipality of Torricella Sicura, which in the same period offers food festivals, hamlet celebrations, and, in autumn, the Cultural Festival of the Rural Villages of the Laga with the event "Towards the Madonnina delle Nevi, between stories and legends," dedicated specifically to this site.
A hamlet of just twenty inhabitants, Ioanella is an authentic stop for those who want to discover the interior of Abruzzo far from mass tourism circuits. The Madonnina Walk is the ideal opportunity to get to know this corner of the Teramo mountains, the work of the Alpini in the area, and the simple spirituality that accompanies the life of the rural villages of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
The 2026 Madonnina Walk is confirmed for Sunday, August 23 in Ioanella, in the municipality of Torricella Sicura (Teramo), as part of the "Torricella Eventi 2026" summer program. The organization is entrusted as usual to the Ioanella Alpini Group, which accompanies participants on the walk from the village to the Madonnina delle Nevi.
At the moment, the Municipality has published the date but not yet the details regarding times and meeting points. The precise program (starting point and time, any religious moment, and refreshments) will be communicated by the Alpini in the weeks leading up to the event. For 2026, participation remains free and open to all.
