The traditional festival of the Villa Moreni hamlet, in the heart of the Gran Sasso

The San Rocco Festival is one of the most deeply rooted summer celebrations in Fano Adriano, a mountain municipality in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, perched at nearly a thousand meters above sea level on the northern slopes of the Gran Sasso. The event takes place every year on August 16th, the liturgical day dedicated to the saint, in the small hamlet of Villa Moreni, where the church named after San Rocco stands.
San Rocco, a pilgrim and protector invoked against epidemics, has been a beloved figure in Apennine villages for centuries. In Fano Adriano, his cult is upheld by the Villa Moreni community, which sets up the square in front of the church on the day of the festival to welcome residents, holidaymakers, and those who have returned to the village for the summer. The day combines religious moments, such as the mass and the traditional procession, with the popular festivities that bring the village to life until evening.
The organization is entrusted to the Pro Loco of Fano Adriano, which in recent years has revived the event as part of the village's rich summer calendar, curated in collaboration with the Municipality, the Community Cooperative, and local associations. The stage setup was supported by the GAL Gran Sasso Laga, a testament to how local entities invest in traditional festivals as a means of fostering cohesion and preserving small mountain villages.
The San Rocco Festival, along with the Coronation and San Valentino festivals, is part of a group of historical events that mark the summer in Fano Adriano and reinforce its identity. These gatherings weave together devotion, memory, and a sense of community, offering visitors an authentic opportunity to discover the pastoral and mountain culture of the Gran Sasso.
Those who reach Fano Adriano for the festival will find a village with alpine charm, a starting point for hikes in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park and home to the Museum of Pastoral Civilization of the Gran Sasso. The San Rocco Festival is the perfect occasion to combine religious tradition with a day in the open air, amidst pristine nature, mountain flavors, and the warm hospitality of the locals.
The San Rocco Festival in Fano Adriano is expected once again in the summer of 2026 as one of the village's traditional events, in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. At the moment, the Pro Loco has not yet released the official dates and program for the 2026 edition; however, the event is tied to the liturgical feast of the saint, celebrated on August 16th in the hamlet of Villa Moreni. Information will be updated as soon as the village's summer schedule is made public.
Fano Adriano can be reached by car from Teramo (about 40 km) by traveling up the Val Vomano along the SS80 and turning towards the mountain villages on the Teramo side of the Gran Sasso. The nearest train stations are in Teramo and Montorio al Vomano, which are connected by bus services.
The festival is held in the hamlet of Villa Moreni, at the church of San Rocco, traditionally on August 16th. Admission is free.
Comfortable clothing and a light jacket for the evening are recommended, due to the altitude. The surrounding area is full of trails and scenic viewpoints within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. For up-to-date information, you can contact the Pro Loco of Fano Adriano.
